Detachable Necks/Hoods

Does anyone know if there are any hoods that are compatible with the smartpak deluxe blankets? it looks like the blankets have two D-ring hooks on each side of the neck for attachment … i’ve never had to purchase neck/hoods separately from blankets.

Is there a certain one you need? Smartpak sells a few of them.

Yes, most any neck hoods will work, I always have separate hoods. I even use the Rambo hoods (which have the silly velcro attachments) when they are on sale with my smartpak blankets. I just used some spare clips & hay string (I’m good at knots) to tie in some clips on the hoods velcro loops. I’ve also used an old leg strap (I never throw away old hardware lol) looped through the velcro & have seen other people use carabiner clips. Other brands of hoods (like dover or smartpak) usually already have clips on them. As long as the blanket has attachment rings on it, I can get the hood to work one way or another!

thank you! i’m trying to make it super easy for my barn to deal with any hoods/hood attachments, so i’m trying to avoid Gerry rigging if possible.

I’m not familiar with the Smartpak Deluxe blankets but I’m willing to take pics of and post here of my Weatherbeeta hoods if that may help. I have both the ComfiTec Essentials and the Dynamic Plus hoods from WB (they are basically the same). They have three inner straps with plastic buckles to attach to three d rings on the blankets. One at withers and two on sides.

It sounds like it could be similar to the Dover brand.

Ah gotcha! Hmm I think Schneider’s hoods/neck covers use clips? There are 2 rings to hook onto each side so technically 4 in all, probably to adjust fit.

I was going to suggest this as well. All my Schneiders blankets have 2 D rings on each side to clip to.

I totally understand- mine are at home, so I only have to not annoy myself. But you should be fine with any hood that comes with clips (of mine, only the Rambo does not).

I did notice, I just got a schneiders blanket & it has 4 attachment rings (2 per side), while my smartpak blankets have 3 (1 per side & 1 on withers). This hasn’t been a problem for me bc the hood I use with the schneiders blanket is the one I made more flexible straps for. My smartpak hood (3 clips) would need an add on strap to work with the schneiders blanket - the side clips would be fine, but the withers clip wouldn’t reach without help. I hope this makes sense. So you might just double check the number of clips on a schneiders hood if you looked at those. Both the Dover/riders intl hoods I have have 3 clips, like smartpak.

If this works & anyone else finds it useful - here is a pic of how I converted the velcro attachments on a Horseware hood to work with a blanket with 3 rings on it (like smartpak). Ok, one of the clips is broken, so I need to fix that, lol, but I have eleventy billion more lbs of hay string. Middle strap is an old leg strap, so it is stretchy. I currently use this with a schneiders blanket as well by just clipping the strap to one of the upper rings on the blanket, everything has stayed in place on the young ottb.
