Developing Jumpers - Who would you use?

Hello! The purpose of this post is primarily selfish - I am trying to gather information to start research and gather advice/insight. But it might provide some helpful information for others. This isn’t hypothetical - I am truly wanting to explore options.

Question: If you could chose any professional in the US to develop your young horse to Grand Prix (1.45+m), who would you select and why?

A few caveats:

  • professional must actually take new client horses - this is a real life situation so not looking to waste anyone’s time if they don’t even take outside horses, looking to develop a long term relationship.
  • program must exemplify horse care (good turnout and time outside stall is highly valued). As well as obvious horse welfare.
  • primary horse in question has pretty much all the bells and whistles to get there (scope, brain, power) just needs some help putting the pieces together in the lines and keeping their head when they pull a rail. Horse missed a vital year competing due to COVID restrictions and other factors so I consider them a little behind.
  • horse had amazing foundation and training, so a dedicated young horse trainer is not a necessity.
  • trainer with experience, I do love supporting the up and comers but this horse really needs someone who has been there and done it.
  • trainer is good at working with owner/breeder, frequent updates, willingness to discuss program as well as physical and medical needs.

Please feel free to PM any suggestions as well. But this is meant to be positive because I’m purely looking to form a new partnership with a pro for not one but possibly a few horses; mares, geldings, stallions. Location is not an issue at this time, I don’t want to be limited by geography.

Thank you!

Brooke Kemper at Shadow Pond Farm in Culpeper, VA. She’s taken young horses all the way through FEI levels and has a great support system at her barn. She’s talented and understands the needs of young, developing horses.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Harold Chopping. He has a great track record at the top levels of the sport, is great to work with, and has consistently produced horses up to the GP levels.

You may consider Matt Hollberg, not sure if he’s now based in PA or VA but winters in FL. He is a lovely soft rider but consistently performs at the upper levels with a variety of horses. I have always been impressed watching him ride friends’ horses and I know his pricing is (or at least was when I inquired last year) very reasonable. I have several personal connections to his team and know their horses are VERY well cared for.
