Devon Fall Classic Accident - Update

I can chime in with more sizing help one the MIPS helmets since I just received two different ones I ordered during the helmet sale to compare.

So I have a not-small, pretty oval head with a high forehead. Basically an egg head. OneK’s do not fit me, even in long oval. GPA is generally too round. Same with International. Even several of the CO’s were too round. Definitely get the major forehead pressure thing others have mentioned–back in the day when there were fewer helmet brands to try on, I thought having a headache from your helmet was just going to have to be my lot in life.

The CO GR8 fits very nicely, in a 7 1/8. Many years ago I tried on a CO Hampton and CO Showjumper and they fit me nicely as well. The Tipperary Sportage is also super comfy for my head–I basically forget it’s there.

I bought the TV Lynx in a medium (I’m in the very top of the size range that’s supposed to fit in a medium, but I hedged my bets that it would work, plus didn’t want to get an even bigger helmet for my large-ish head). When I first put it on it felt…passable, once I played with the dial fit. Tried it on the next day and it felt better–not quite as nice as my GR8 or Tipperary, but comfortable enough. It’s also a nice, well made, good looking helmet.

I also picked up the CO MyPS in the wide peak, in a 7 1/8 (same size as my GR8), and it’s definitely on the rounder side and seems to run small. I’m considering exchanging it for a 7 1/4 just to see if that makes a difference, as it was definitely tight enough that I can’t say with certainty that the shape is what’s wrong…it might just be too small. It’s also a nice helmet–the whole helmet and harness and covered in nice soft faux leather, and I think it’s pretty sharp looking. The wide peak isn’t quite as elegant as the Samshield/OneK version, but I still thought it was a pretty helmet. My SO said I looked like a Star Wars stormtrooper in it.

I’ll update if I do decide to exchange for the larger CO. I’m on the fence about it right now because the TV fits me well enough, and I have two nice, well-fitting non-MIPS helmets that are only a few years old that I should get at least some more wear out of. Not sure I really need 4 helmets right now.

Late to the party here, but wanted to add my two cents for what it’s worth:

I decided to get the EQ3 helmet last year after reading about MIPS technology, and it was definitely an impulse buy as my old helmet wasn’t quite old enough to be retired, but I figured what the heck.

I had had a bad fall this spring where I landed on my shoulder and head after jumping a 3’6” fence. The helmet was very banged up, and my shoulder got dislocated and separated (apparently very uncommon to do both at the same time, goes to show the impact), my entire rib cage even got shifted (the right side is visually more pronounced, and my clothes shift!) anyways my head was completely fine, I didn’t even have a headache.

Needless to say, I replaced that helmet with another EQ3 and will never look at a non-MIPS helmet again.

How does the Trauma Void Lynx compare to the Tipperary? I absolutely cannot wear their helmets, too tight in the front and back, too loose on the sides. If I go up a size the whole thing just floats around.

I like the fit of the Troxel helmets but would like to have the added protection of the MIPS. I’m just an old lady who rides my solid citizen a few times a week but my brain is still in decent shape (as opposed to the rest of me) so I’d like to do what I can to keep it that way.

I contacted OneK about MIPS helmets and I got back:

“We are currently working on a MIPS model conversion for the One K brand. We expect to have first production in January.”

I’m assuming January means January 2020 but for OneK wearers this could be great!

Ha! I was just saying to a friend that I expected One K to add a MIPS model. Given their price points and sales they would likely lose their market share if they didn’t.

Samshield may be the jerk of the party, but many companies are seeming like they do value our brains!

Even though I stayed on I was glad I was wearing my new TV helmet when my horse, who was on his last day of five months of no lunge or turnout, went rogue in the Saturday hack and bucked about a quarter of the way around the ring.

I don’t think it’s quite as cool or quite as comfortable as my OneK, but that is the most comfortable helmet I’ve ever owned.

Another update: OneK anticipates a release of mid-2020. A bit too late for me as i just chopped all my hair off and need to look for a new helmet in the next couple of months but still good.

Just wanted to let you know that you have convinced me to go with a Trauma Void as well. Glad you’re OK after your accident!

Even better (Not helmet related) news.

Tonight I was released from all my physical and occupational therapy for my brain and inner ear balance issues!!! YAY!! I very much exceeded the standards they have set for a “Normal” adult. Better yet my OT therapist explained that all my testing results can now act as a baseline if (God forbid) I have any future head injuries. AND both therapists often go to do educational lectures for sports groups etc… so I am trying to find ways/places for them to come talk to a whole bunch of us riders.

I have my shoulder MRI tomorrow and it’s been a bit worse lately so I could be going right back to PT for that, depending on the findings, but I am technically cleared to ride. However all my therapists and I agree that it’s far better to wait until my shoulder is healed as well before going back to riding. It’ll have been 4 weeks since the accident this Thursday. I am so thankful to be this healthy so soon after a major accident. Fingers crossed that I can ride by Thanksgiving. But if not I will do right by my body and keep spreading the knowledge of MIPS helmets.

After reading this thread, I bought a Trauma Void. It was cheaper than my current $400 CO. I did have to exchange it for a bigger size than I normally wear and the overall helmet is a smidge larger on my peanut head, but I like it. Makes me feel better knowing I have the best technology on my noggin!

Thanks for sharing your story and I am so happy that you are on the mend. I was not aware of this new hat technology until your posting. I have had two “minor” concussions from falls…the last in 2016. Both times I was wearing a hard hat. I can’t imagine riding anytime without one on.

I am totally going to check out these helmets!

Update

It only took me 12.5 weeks to jump again!

Yesterday I took Cudo to a friend’s indoor and tried out my wings and my new Trauma Void Lynx helmet. Omg it felt so good to be able to ‘fly’ again. I’m rusty, I’m making little mistakes and we’re not where we were that day at Devon, but man I don’t know who was happier me or Cudo? LOL.

Em, thank you for sharing all of this. I have a brand new helmet in the car, but I will make it my reserve and order an MIPS helmet tonight. So glad you are back jumping 👍

I ended up getting a CO MyPS, so far I really like it. It’s heavier and bulkier than my old Ovation, but that one was very light weight. I tried a TV, but I think my head is too oval for it, even with the different liners. I actually chose the CO over the skepticism of the sales girl, who thought that it was probably just a marketing thing, and that I should buy a OneK, because she had one, and hadn’t had a concussion for ages! I was like dude, that’s not how it works…

I do not know how I missed this whole thread entirely until your latest update, but I am seriously happy you are well again and back to riding.

I know we don’t know each other, but I think that it is critically important to make people in the horse world understand the importance of wearing helmets. I wear mine out to get horses out of the paddock they are currently in because I have to go through two gates and another pair of horses, who are somewhat a pita. You never know what might happen. People have actually made fun of me because I would put my helmet on just to go get my horse.

Your situation, granted, is much different, and definitely could have had a very different outcome.

Do you have a Facebook post regarding your accident? I would like to link to it on my Facebook to share if that is okay. Let me know what you think!

Safe riding and congrats on your recovery!

2020 Updates

It took 11 months and 3 days but I actually rode Cudo in a show ring today at Radnor. We did 2 Outreach 1m classes because I give all my horses the winter off (Dec-Late Feb typically) and this year with Covid and all, I just let them stay on vacation. Cudo started back July 9th. The others are mostly still off but Chad is about to be put into rotation shortly.

It was a fun show to just see where we are 1 month back in it. Cudo has been VERY forward at home and is harking back to his 2018 tendencies of being a bear to jump at home, while being wonderful at shows to jump. So I wanted to get a quick check in to see if he was going to be great at the shows again…or not.

He was truly awesome. It was 2 nothing classes but you can see on this video he was really easy to rate, adjust (I asked for all those deep spots in the first class) and just overall is still my bestest big boy.

As far as the MIPS Helmets “Crusade” that I am on… I have created a MIPS Facebook group so that anyone and everyone can come get as much info as possible from a great group of members. We have brand reps, tack shop owners, and MANY other MIPS owners. It’s becoming a useful tool and recently Dover Saddlery corporate asked if they could direct their sales people to the group to really see all the info and helmet news that’s on there. That as a huge compliment and I was very humbled by it.

The link is:

So that’s about what I know at this point. I am still kind of sitting here smiling that it was a good day and that I am here at all to enjoy it.

Many thanks for reading.

Excellent update!

I will give the group a try. Had a MIPS For a year, but it was so damn heavy it gave me headaches. I ride several /day and the pain was too much. I chucked it in the trash and got a dial fit type.

I just replied to your post on the group.

Happy to try to help.
