Deworming barn cats that aren't socialized

I have three barn cats that aren’t very social. They will eat in front of me but they tend to be nervous of me. I was wondering how people de worm cats in cases like this. I think putting something between their shoulders might be possible, but one in particular I’m not sure I could get that close to. Is there something flavored like heartgard for dogs? I was thinking of working with them with cat treats to see if I could hand out treats to each one.

There is heartgard for cats, however it is prescription and you probably can’t get it without the cats having a current exam.

Thanks! I will ask my vet about it. They had an exam over the winter when they were altered, so perhaps that will be enough to get the prescription for them. I’ll pick up some cat treats first to see if it would even be feasible that way.

Feed them at the same time every day. Hang out and pet the ones that are friendly and sneak attack pet the ones that are skittish. When they become used to that, get a million tiny syringes from your vet, and the topical product of your choice.

On The Day, draw up lots of syringes. Feed them. Hang out and do the petting thing as usual, then nonchalantly just go for the squirt between the shoulder blades on each cat while they are all eating. Actually, I prefer back of the head just below ear height so that there’s no chance they can lick it off. I had a cat go nuts once after I saw him do some contortions to lick off his Advantage. Poor boy :frowning: I did manage to get hold of him and rinse his mouth out, but I would never want to see that happen again, especially to an already skittish barn cat.

Anyway, this method has been serving me well in a dairy barn for years. I can de-flea/de-worm all but the most feral of the herd. Even the toms I can’t get within 10’ of at any other time have come to understand that I will be hanging around for a few minutes at am feed time and they will occasionally have a human hand on them for a moment.

Good luck!

There is a topical feline dewormer called Profender. you apply it just like Frontline, Revolution, etc. Ask your vet about it.
