Diamant de Semilly vs. Kannan

I’m interested in both of these stallions and my initial research seems to suggest they would compliment similar, modern mares. This is one of those situations where I wish there was data like the KWPN keeps about offspring (yes I know numbers aren’t everything, but it would be helpful).

I know we have several well traveled and also international posters, and I was hoping someone could offer up insight on the offspring strengths and weaknesses of these two stallions that they have observed. Do they seem to stamp their offspring or allow the mare to come through? Any comments on gaits? Both are noted for rideability.

I have not seen any Kannan offspring in person, but I have seen a couple by Diamant. Not enough to form a solid opinion.

PMs are fine too. TIA!

I know numbers are not saying everything, but you can look at them and interpret.

Total production of Diamant and Kannan in France from year 2000 to 2004 (to keep things comparable):
Diamant: 499 and Kannan: 582

Number of horses with an ISO > 150 (horses able to get an ISO of 150, are capable of placing in 1.45m GP)
Diamant: 8 and Kannan: 11

This gives us:
Diamant: 1.60% and Kannan: 1.89%

I can say that Diamant offspring are looking much nicer than Kannan’s and that Kannan seem to pass more power to his offspring.
They pass both good ride-ability and good work ethics.

Hope it help.

Very interesting Andy. We, too, have looked at both these stallions for one of our 1.40 mares, Safira 9 (Caratello B/Acord 1/Dulf II), specifically looking to improve her canter, quickness, and modernize her type. While we think she is all that and a bag of chips, I couldnt stomache Diamont’s stud fee, so the choice was made for us! We may end up using another French stallion on her that stands privately in California, but I think Kannan is so fantastic, I want to buy a couple of doses anyway, while it is still affordable and available.

Interested to hear others thoughts.

Just wanted to add that we used both this year and their frozen semen was excellent.

Do you mind sharing what mares you used each stallion on and what were looking to improve upon on each mare?

How many straws did you use for Diamant?

They are not my mares so I did not choose the stallions. I’m just an employee

  1. We used it on a good mare with a good vet.

Everyone I know that has gotten a Diamant pregnancy has used the single straw “dose”. I’ve only ever heard that it is phenomenal.

They are super stallions both of them but I’m a little bit boring and somewhat conservative and would choose Diamant de Semilly over Kannan any day of the week for one main reason the higher percentage of TB in his blood lines.

Yes that is correct 1 dose was 1 straw. But if you have a good mare and good vet it really isn’t that much more expensive than other frozen stallions. I think we paid $1850

I had the pleasure of riding a Kannan stallion son while riding in Europe. He was extremely well tempered on the ground (wouldn’t have known he was a stallion) and very rideable. He was a bit plain and was not heavy per se, but definitely solidly build. Undersaddle he was a bit slow off the ground, but had plenty of power and scope.
