Denise, my comment was not ill meant. But I have taken Linda’s camera on two occasions so that she could watch without camera.

Diarado
There was a thread about Diarado on Horse-gate. The breeder of Diarado said that if you breed to Diarado the mare should have a lot of blood (ie more thoroughbred). This was suprising to me since Diarado looked very forward.
I also ran across a conformation picture of Diarado. The PS website does not show him just standing there. You should be aware that Diarado’s hind legs do hang back and he is a little sickle hocked. I am not saying this is necessarily bad. Just be careful which mare you use.

Absolutely stunning stallion. I have a Diamant de Semilly mare in foal to Berlin and I am praying for a colt. Would love to stand a Berlin X Diamant de Semilly X Quidam de Revel Stallion on the USA.
It really does not matter in the end - what his foals look like. It is what they do as adult horses in a show ring. And it is much too soon to tell if either he - or any of his offspring will actually do anything, he is very young, and unproven. And the babies are just that babies. It is impossible to predict much from a first foal crop.
Also keep in mind, that the group that owns him paid a lot of money for him. 900,000 euros - ($1.4million US) They want to get their money back on a big investment - so I would expect the hype to continue as long as possible.
The word I heard from Europe was that the foals were “normal” - which is what the Germans call average.

Bloomoonfarm, Diarado’s G-Grandsire is Contender, make sure that is what you want. Your mare should have a good hind legs if you consider this.
Dan, sometimes when they say a stallion needs a mare with a lot of blood it is not in regard to their movement or type, but is more for their mind and or quickness ie: the stallion can breed a little cold. This does not surprise me as other stallions from this motherline are similiar, Corofino, Crawford (Diarados mother is the full sister of), and Camiros. You will notice that all of these stallions breed with very nice type. Actually, the breeder of Diarado would mostly likely not have bred to Diamant unless she needed more herself. I do not know this for sure, but might speculate.

I have seen many of the foals and personally, I don’t care for them. In my estimation , they are not noble enough , nor do they stand over enough ground. I have seen several “sheepsheads” on them as well (Coriano is also known for this). This motherline (318d2) is well known for top breeding horses and international competitors but is also known to throw small and not very pretty sometimes. Classic case of having to accept the good with the bad.
The Holsteiner Verband is very smart to have the rule in place that only allowed Diarado to cover 80 mares. After seeing and hearing about his foals across Europe , now the breeders can hand pick the mares that he covers and future foals should be better.
Diarado’s frozen semen is excellent. I tried for an ET this year and did get one embryo but was unsuccessful. I am going to try again in the spring. There was not a problem with the semen it is of excellent quality.
My Contender mare had a filly by Catoki that was so nice I bred her back to Catoki. With Contender that close in the pedigrees I would still use Diarado on the Contender mare. Not many stallions I would do that with.
I will try an ET again out of my Dirano/Derwisch mare that is in competition. I have seen a couple of really nice Diarado foals and the mare plays at least half of the equation.

the volume of data from breeders have told us about problems with doing this, with oddly-growing foals ending up at the butchers. acord II and carthago are two others the breeders have learned to stay away from linebreeding with.
that a few may have gotten away with it doesn’t alter the fact that your chances of problems are extremely high in doing this cross.
there are volumes and volumes of data folks. dig in, and save yourselves some problems.

Oh shoot! That’s a bummer to hear. I was going to put Diarado with a mare next year whose dam sire is Contender. I wonder if I should be second guessing myself now…?..:eek:

Yes, the mare is already in foal, but he is available frozen and it is expensive esp with the euro exchange now.
