Diarrhea after Quest Plus

Just wondering if anyone has had this as a side effect? My mare had diarrhea for a day after being dewormed. It seems to have stopped now.

I kept her off hay last night as a precaution that it might turn into colic but she seemed back to normal this morning. Not sure if this was a hay related GI upset or a reaction to the dewormer.

Her fly sheet was completely soiled and she needed a bath. If this is a reaction, it’s the first time she has done that.

Some horses do have some reaction to being dewormed, whether QP, Q, plain ivermectin, heck I had one who got a swollen sheath for 2 days after using double Strongid

Killing or paralyzing parasites causes some level of inflammation in the body, especially killing as those dead parasites start releasing some toxins. If the inflammation is big enough, you can see things like this.

FWIW, my horse who reacted had been dewormed regularly for 8-9 years at that point, and never reacted that way in the next 11-12 years he was alive, including the time I used Quest on him with a FEC of 1500.

Mine did that if he had a load of encysted small strongyles. Usually for more than a day. Once he was down to lower numbers it didn’t happen any more.

In other words, it wasn’t the dewormer that caused it, but rather the worm die off. Specifically the encysted worms dying for my horse.
