Diarrhea.. more of a whine

I’ve posted about my horse many times before. He’s 24, a Fjord and had/has fecal water syndrome for years but now we have diarrhea, full fledged diarrhea.

Everyone knows how good Fjords are at growing a coat like a yak. Now picture those pretty hind legs coated in manure. That flowing tail covered in chunks of manure that shot right out in the tail. :weary:

It got up to 47 today so I picked a sunny spot and gave the worst spots a bath.

I am working with a vet. She had some prednisolone sent to me and he’s been on that since Friday. No change yet.

He’s been on safe starch forage last week in case the hay was too stemmy. No change.

His diet was Timothy pellets, Vermont Blend Pro, 1/4 cup chia seeds twice a day, 2000 IU vit e, and Horse tech water werks.

Now he’s just on safe starch, Timothy pellets, prednisolone and biosponge. Hopefully it improve soon.

I made the mistake of trying him on Prascend again three weeks ago, with APF Pro, and haven’t been able to get the diarrhea under control since. I had to take him off it earlier due to diarrhea and thought maybe the APF would help. Nope

Enough of my saga. I had to whine to someone. lol

I’m so sorry! Just came to commiserate, as my filly has had FFWS for a handful of months now and it’s just so depressing. Whine away, you deserve it!

It sure is depressing. I’m tired of bathing in winter and seeing :poop: covered legs and tail.

It’s going to be 9 degrees Friday night with wind gusts 20-40 so I’ll probably put a blanket on him and I’m sure it’ll be covered with poop too.

How is your filly doing? Found anything that works for her?

Unfortunately no solution yet, although on Jan 1 we are moving to a new barn where I will have much more control over her diet, so I’m looking forward to trying some changes at that time.

We have done probiotics, metronidazole, and most recently some hay changes. I also chopped her beautiful flaxen tail off to her hocks for the winter :sob: The new barn will have hot water, so I’ll be able to wash her more regularly… she was getting poo burns lately, but between our freezing temps and being quite pregnant, I’ve had to unfortunately leave her to her own devices a lot.

My friend’s filly had the issue until she found hay that didn’t contain any sprays. Another person said their youngster “grew out of it” when he turned 3. I’m on the FB group, but honestly I probably won’t really address it until the summer when I’m not preggo anymore haha.

I hope having more control helps and wonderful on the hot water!! That makes such a difference.

I’m waiting on the vet’s office to call me back. I’m scheduling a fecal transplant.

Oh no poor Leif!!!

Could the temperature rise have aggravated anything?? I only ask because that is Charlie’s most obvious trigger.

Either way, I hope the vet gets bak to you soon :worried:

@FjordBCRF, no, I tried Prascend again. Like an idiot I couldn’t leave well enough alone. :pensive:

I did quarter tablets and did the APF Pro also but two days in and explosive diarrhea. Now nothing is controlling it.

I took him off the psyllium last week because it wasn’t helping at all. Got some platinum performance gi and started it last night.

Fecal transplant scheduled for next Wednesday. I bought some hay cubes today and am going to have to put the donor horse on his diet too.

She’s going to be thrilled. The barn hay is very weedy and his is chopped Timothy, safe starch and now the cubes.

Fecal transplant was yesterday. Today there were no cow patties or diarrhea in his paddock!!

I know it’s too early to tell and it may not last but I’ll take it today.
