I love the first one with the cat butt sticking out of the bag where you don’t expect a hole to be!
There is a lot of pawing and swatting going on.
They all look great!
I figured it’s worth updating this with cute kitty pictures! It has been a year since I first noticed a kitty hanging out on my porch, and nine months since I trapped her and she surprised us with four little kittens.
Bunny, as we’ve named the momma cat, has really come around. We call her “aggressively affectionate”. She loves her food a little too much, loves playing with strings, and is one of the best carpet/sisal shredders I have ever seen in my life… She even destroyed a section of carpet in what we call the “Bunny Room”.
Here Bunny is waiting for her food:
And the two kittens I kept, Jello & Cupcake:
Helping “set up” the vertical cat shelves we got last week:
Supervising watering day for the plants - there are THREE cats in this photo!
Franklin (black cat), Jello (tabby) and Cupcake (white tabby) yesterday enjoying a snowday. I washed and folded a fleece blanket and left it on the dryer… should have known better!
A photo of Jello, who has completely stolen my heart - and a good representation of why I can’t do indoor plant watering day without close cat scrutiny anymore!
Awww!! They’re all so cute!!! Bunny lucked out when you trapped her. I’m sure appreciates the finer things now, and especially heat and regular meals!
Her facial markings and coloring remind me so much of my Thomas.
The three amigos seem to really enjoy their supervisory positions. Precious
I love Bunny’s tiny moustache. How did Franklin feel about his new family? Jello & Cupcake are super adorable, looks like maybe a bit of British Shorthair in there?
What a cute crew! Bless you for taking in Bunny and keeping Jello and Cupcake, too.
Franklin loves both of them, but Cupcake seems especially attached:
@BatCoach I wonder! Mom is pretty short and stumpy… No idea who the dad is, but I have seen a black cat around that resists my Have A Heart trap.
It’s been a whole YEAR since the Surprise Kittens were born!! Bunny (momma feral) is doing well and the kittens have added such a comedic vibrance to the house. Plants and fragile items live on the edge in Casa Beowulf with those two strolling the halls.
I celebrated their birthday today with some wet chicken pate topped with blueberry-chicken treats and one small frozen mouse each. Cupcake thought the mouse was the best gift EVER, but Jello was not impressed. Bunny got her own pate and Churu strip for giving birth (and putting up with) to those two clowns.
Warning: there is a frozen mouse in one of these pictures (no gore) so if you are squeamish, look with care!
How it started:
Today:
Time flies!! They’re all grown up and gorgeous
I think Snickers would be in the same league as Jello with the mouse.
Happy Birthday kittens!!
Happy Birthday, Kitty Cats! @beowulf, thank you for posting the pictures.
Please tell me more about blueberry chicken and frozen mice (i am always looking for treats to tempt my 18yo).
I also wish i had baseboard heaters like yours. 2nd-best heat ever IMO.
Happy Birthday Jello and Cupcake!
Thank you Bunny for finding the best home for you and your babies.
You have the same heat and carpet as I do.
I love the face in pic #3. Whaaa- at?
Do they eat the mice? I think if I gave my cats a mouse, they would not know what to do spoiled beasts that they are.
Mine, too. Then I’d forget about it until the decomposing corpse started to smell, leading to a day-long search with a flashlight to find where it had been cached.
Mine, too - or else they’d leave them in my bed, or my shoes. Or they’d do what the outside cats do, and leave the head and entrails for me to randomly find (or step in).
@beowulf - they look great! It’s always so humbling and amazing to look back on how tiny they once were, and how grownup they are now.
These are the treats. Don’t get sticker shock – that bag is nearly two pounds. It’s actually cheaper per ounce than your standard 2-3ounce treat pouches. It comes in a 2.5 oz at Petco. I bought it on sale and figured if they hated it I could use it to try to lure any other prospective TNRs to my porch:
A friend of mine has been telling me about the benefits of feeding a more cat-centric diet (including mice) for a while now. I’m not a squeamish person but as someone who formerly had pet mice and rats and loved them very much, I haven’t come around to the idea of providing them as a main staple to their diet. I told @Larbear, I was not prepared for how cute those little mice looked when you take them out of the pouch.
I was worried that they wouldn’t know what to do with the mouse, but I figured since the rest of the cats are former ferals-turned-housecats, that between the six of them someone would make sure it didn’t go to waste. Sure enough as soon as Jello stopped playing with her mouse, her mom (Bunny) swooped in and ate it. So no worrying about cache stench here, whew!!
And yes, it’s so humbling to look back on their first day with us. I still laugh at Bunny’s timing. It actually worked out well we were on our way out the door when I noticed the blood.
What I can’t get over is how tiny Bunny is in these old photos! She must have been a baby then, because she’s much bigger now. She is still by definition a small cat, especially when compared to Jello.
Some photos of Bunny’s glow-up, featuring the Bunny Bucket. We have tons of expensive, cute little cat beds and what does Bunny like the most? A muck tub that I used to store my gardening stuff in. Well, found a new place for all my gardening tools and Bunny got a new Bucket.
Bunny next to her monster of a daughter - Jello is nearly 12lb!
Thank you.
And I love the pics.
A few weeks ago i took an old plastic storage bin, removed the lid, folded up a comforter inside, and laid a fleecy throw on top to protect against the lid latches. My 18yo loves her new sunbed and it’s light enough that i can easily move it to follow the sun.
Bunny’s so pretty! Love her coloring. I’m a sucker for tabby cats with white.
Her eyes look so content.
Lol yeh I like mice too and they are pretty cute. I feel a little bad for them. I have rescued mice at the barn that got trapped in my muck tub. They climbed in (rope on my handle) but couldn’t get out. I have sucker stamped on my forehead.
