Difference between alfalfa cubes and pellets?

Like a dufus I ordered pellets this time not cubes. Sigh.

Anything I need to know?

Thanks

The difference is only that the cubes provide a forage benefit where the pellets really don’t.

And some horses prefer one over the other.

Pellets are easier to store and soak quicker.

I noticed the soaking thing. Very sweet. Are there more additives in one than the other I wonder? Thanks for the feedback so far.

Cubes are pressed in the field and pellets are heat pressed.

There were many horses some time ago that got botulism from eating cubes. http://articles.latimes.com/1989-11-09/local/me-1549_1_hay-cubes

I believe there have been other cases…

The cubes are pressed in the field where rabbits etc can get in the hay. Pellets are safer to feed since they are heat pressed and the heat can kill the bacteria.

Loose hay can have animals in it but the air should take care of any bacteria.

That is the only difference I know of from pellets vs hay cubes.

That second link was a round bale/ haylage.

I do not know if something like this http://standleeforage.com/product-formats/cubes/alfalfa/alfalfa-premium-cubes would be adequate to prevent botulism or other contamination.
