Dimensions tack locker

Getting ready to build some lockers for my saddles, looking for suggestions on best dimensions.
They are dressage saddles if that makes a difference… I will have separate cabinets for everything else, so they will just need to hold the saddles for now.
Was looking at 24x24x80” pantry cabinets but thinking it may be too narrow?
Planning on pull out saddle holders.

The barn I am at has 24 x 24 x 6 lockers. I ride dressage. They work okay as long as you don’t try to keep stuff on the sides.

Make them bigger than you think. And before you buy a “premade” cabinet, take a saddle with you and put it in there, make sure it fits!

That is a great idea, thank you

Kind of torn on whether to buy a pre made cabinet or build it… I want them to match the rest of the tackroom, which will be premade kitchen cabinets, but having trouble finding the size I want. I found a couple but they cost an arm and a leg.

May just have the husband build the frame and then buy pre made doors for it. The room locks so the closet doesn’t have to.

Also look at the most common & affordable conveniently-sized storage containers in Walmart or your favorite sundries store. People will use those to help organize their things, making the most of the space for all their stuff. Thinking of those black stackable ones they sell, about the dimensions of the old ‘milk crates’.

Note that is says the dimensions are 12" x 12" x 10 1/2", but that’ s inside. They are actually wider from the outside to the outside of the sides.

I agree to make them bigger than you think you will need! I don’t think you will regret it!

The last barn I boarded at had fabulous lockers. I wish I had pictures. They were big enough I could stand in them, and literally used my locker to change in on several occasions. I want to say they were 4’ wide x 6’ tall. I’m not sure on the depth, but they included 2 saddle racks in each locker and there was still a good foot or more of space from the end of the saddle rack to the door… so probably around 4’ deep, too? There was a short, skinny shelf built into the locker to the right of the saddle racks, which was perfect for odds and ends, as well as a top shelf that ran the width of the locker above the saddle racks. And there was still plenty of floor space for buckets and grooming totes.

I’ve had tack lockers at several different farms where I boarded, but those were the only ones I ever truly appreciated! I could fit all my necessities for 3 horses and then some in there!

They will be inside of my tackroom which is 11x14, there will be separate cabinets for their bridles, saddlepads, boots etc. So really just the saddles will be in these

Thanks for the tip about the tote sizes, I will keep that in mind for my blanket storage spaces as I will want to keep those in totes! May keep the boots and brushes in totes as well, not sure yet…

I just hate tack lockers. I’d just put in saddle racks and lock the tack room.

I don’t like them out in the open… cats climb on things and dust and… idk. Looks neater if they are put away

When I built my barn a couple years ago my contractor found our tack lockers from a company that supplies schools. We got great wooden lockers that were advertised for school science labs. Price was very reasonable and quality is good. We gave them specific dimensions for shelving above the saddles and a pull out drawer below.
