Disproportionately Small Head *pics*

She newly acquired Friesian/SWB that sticks at 15.2 but is by/out of 16.2 parents so we are expecting ~ another hand out of her.

Both parents have lovely above average faces. This mare’s fore face appears unusually short. Is there any hope that her fore face will sprout as she continues to grow? If not, has anyone ever ended up with a cob bridled 16.2 big boned horse?

Anyone know a magic potion to de-teacup a nose

I’m not seeing a stupidly short head in those photos. It looks petite and ponyish compared to her body size and bone, but not ridiculous.

Her growing molars are making the underside of her jaw larger, and the head profile to appear a bit triangular. This is totally normal and as the head grows and the molars settle down the triangular shape reduces considerably. This may also be contributing to the extra-small muzzle look.

My 16.1h tb mare has a tiny head. The pics don’t really show it though. She has a decent sized body and a small petite face. She needs a cob bridle. These are the pics from Canter. Sorry don’t have any others that show her face well. She has a very dished head for a tb.

Ponyish is exactly the word I was searching for earlier. The head isn’t atrocious, but rather it seems very ponyish and small considering her breeding and the head on both of her parents. The difference is more extreme in person because it seems that her body has once again sprouted.

I hadn’t thought about her molars impacting the overall shape but that makes so much sense.

I never thought I’d hear a Friesian cross owner say ‘I wish my horses head was larger’

I don’t see a tiny head, she’s cute.

My Friesian cross ended up looking like a moose while she was growing… thankfully she grew into the head and had a great personality.

I don’t think the head looks disproportionately small, it’s a nice head. The head looks different in the conformation photo, I guess it’s the angle, I don’t see the dish seen in the cantering shot.

DLF - I really like that mare.

Well we tend to post photos that are more…flattering but I think this is a more accurate representation. She is a really awesome mare and we are excited to add her to the family but we do have fingers crossed that her little pony face matures. http://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b428/tayloradams1990/Venice/venice_headshot.jpg

lol, I was thinking the same thing. GraceLike Rain, congratulations on your new horse  Friesian/Swedish is a Friesian Sporthorse by definition – there aren’t a lot of them out there. I hope you enjoy her!

How old is she? My mare’s head grew between 3 & 4. Up until then she looked like a giraffe - very leggy, super short coupled, a loonnng neck and a pony head. She ended up with a ‘normal’ size head and a pretty one at that. She is the ultimate ugly duckling story, and we have pictures to prove it. She was not a pretty baby. Or 2yro or 3yro

She also went from orange (not red, ORANGE) chestnut to brown chestnut. She was UGLY.

…better smaller than a honking great chunk of a head - no?

She turns 3 in May so it sounds like there is a chance there is hope! Both of our girls had very large heads so when you eye becomes accustomed to a proportionately large head, something that is smaller seems extra small. http://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b428/tayloradams1990/Venice/sidebyside.jpeg
Since she will never be bred we don’t put much weight on registries but both parents were approved and she is registered as a Friesian Sporthorse. She was very thoughtfully bred and my sister definitely bought her for her movement as opposed to face or quantity of hair but a pretty face is always a nice thing to have ;).

I am very much still in the market and actually am looking at a Friesian cross mare this weekend. I had not initially considered the breed but God has a sense of humor so we may end up with two half Friesians in the family. Horse searching is exhausting and incredibly unrewarding.

I don’t think her head will grow a lot, but you never know. I wouldn’t worry about it too much, I don’t think it looks awful? The shorter mouth and shorter head is not uncommon in the Friesian breed - I’ve seen more then a few, seems they either have really long heads, or shorter more refined heads, not a whole lot in between. And honestly, I have had a few crosses that did have smaller, more refined heads - not all Friesians are bucket heads! My riding mare has a very refined head, and she is 1/2 Friesian, 1/2 Dutch Warmblood, registered Friesian Heritage Horse.

I don’t think her head looks small at all.

Totally looks like Beetlejuice. Or like she’s the horse of one of those little shrunken heads. I will be over immediately to get her to spare you the humiliation.

She’s lovely.

I think she is very cute and agree that it’s the size of the jaw that is making her head look a bit short. I might not have noticed though if you hadn’t pointed it out.
