Divergence insufficiency

just wondered if anyone had this diagnosis? Double vision at far distance only…

How much do you know about diplopia in all its forms?

I have idiopathic double vision now for some years and it keeps changing a little.
First Drs do with any kind of double vision without a reason, like a concussion or stroke or such, is to get a brain MRI to rule out anything going on there.
Then they check for immune and metabolic problems, like RA, MS, lupus, or Graves, etc.

There are about eight main eye muscles and their enervation in each eye.
They control eye movement and how eyes work together best.

Mine can be corrected well with prism lenses, which seems to point to being a muscle imbalance more than a neurological problem, but no one knows.
I don’t drive in traffic, have someone drive for me, just around the country roads and not unless necessary.
It is a nuisance to have to drive slow to see well, close one eye to see which one of several images coming at you is the real one, hoping there is someone there to turn you can follow, not have to guess where to go next in turns, etc.
Eye dr said I was fine to drive, but I still don’t feel that confident in traffic.

A good eye doctor will best determine a cause and what may work for you.

This can come on from concussions, mild traumatic brain injuries or more serious situations. Get yourself checked out. For eyes, you want to be assessed by a neuro optometrist or neuro ophthalmologist. They can greatly help by setting you up with prescriptions glasses, eye exercises and therapies.

I already have had all these tests and the diagnosis is age related divergence insufficiency. I’ve ordered glasses with prisms for the first go-round of correction. I was just wondering if anyone else had the same diagnosis. I’ve done all my research and it seems to be the generic age related type of double vision only at a distance.

If prism lenses is all you need, it will be fine.
Your eyes will adjust to the new prescription if you wear them all the time.
If you don’t, it will take much longer and may still have double vision.

Worked great for me and that is what my eye dr said, why it did work so well for me, because I used them all day, unlike those that keep taking them off.

You may want to ask your dr how you need to use them, your situation may be different.

It took over a month to get my glasses, long wait, guess only some labs make them?

Ordered mine at Walmart, 8 days to deliver. My doc said I needn’t wear them to ride.

Good, you have orders then, best luck they work for you.

Sure nice when you look at traffic lights and there are not several of those.

Thanks…I’m trying these prisms for 2 weeks then seeing the specialist again. If they don’t work well, Walmart gives you 60 days to return the glasses and correct them

My correction with prism lenses was immediate, hardly no double vision, but walking around took a little getting used to.

I still have trouble over time, eyes seem to keep changing.
Also when tired, double vision returns then, like reading at night.
That took a bit longer, letters were still running into each other after an hour or so, but eventually my eyes adjusted.
I can read 3-4 hours now before eyes play out and things get whacky again.

The trouble driving is the speed, eyes don’t adjust so well to quick changes of movement and those split seconds count when driving.
I don’t drive in traffic, get someone to do it for me.

Maybe your problem is different, so it will have a different pattern.

I had this after a concussion and vision therapy corrected it. Hope the prisms work for you though!

Three days using the prisms and no double vision. I see the specialist in two weeks and am hoping for no more changes.
