DIY Recipes

As requested!

You may note that a few of these recipes differ from the “original” in the removal of essential oils… I tend to be very leery of using essential oils with animals, so omit them whenever they are being used for scent, or for nebulous purposes.

Coat Drying Powder
half cup baking soda
half cup corn starch
quarter cup arrowroot
two tablespoons bentonite clay

Bit Butter (I’ve been through a few iterations)
1 oz. Beeswax
1 oz cocoa butter
1 oz shea butter
1 oz wheat germ
1 oz sunflower oil
1 oz mango butter.
This is one where for a friend’s mare with cracked mouth corners, I did use a little bit of essential oil, based on https://www.morsandmore.com/en/accessoires/11449804-lip-balm-sweet-moutheol-.html

Braiding Wax: I didn’t love this one. It ended up a bit too much; too heavy, too oily etc, but it might be a good starting point for someone!
Two ounces beeswax
2 oz shea butter
2 oz. Mango butter
2 oz coconut oil
1 oz jojoba oil
1 oz sunflower oil
Half teaspoon clay

Liniment:
Equal parts Wintergreen alcohol & Listerine (or generic mouthwash) with a splash of Witch Hazel (that stuff is pricy!) use full strength to rub down legs.
In a bucket of cool water, sponge on, squeegee off for a body wash

Scratches treatment:
Equal parts diaper rash ointnent, athletes foot cream & triple ABX ointment
I get all three from Dollar Tree.

Ditto on the scratches treatment. If you need something a bit stronger sub a 30 gram tube of Panalog for the athlete’s foot cream and triple antibiotic cream in a regular sized tub of diaper rash cream.

Leather balm

1 part shea butter (or cocoa butter, to preference, I find cocoa butter to be greasier and not to my liking)
1 part beeswax
2.5 parts liquid oil (I prefer sweet almond oil, myself)

That sounds great.
But too.much sourcing of ingredients (&work) for lazyass Me :pensive:

I did once let a pint container of liquid Murphy’s oil soap dry out until it became a close equivalent to the gel they no longer make.
I believe that tip came from here :smirk:

Sourcing is actually pretty easy, even in Canada. There are a ton of DIY cosmetics/skin care companies where ordering materials is quite easy… And it’s all cosmetic-grade (or sometimes, food grade), which makes me feel better.

For Canadians, I source most of my stuff through https://soapandmore.ca/
