DIY Stall Drapes

For all those out there (I know there has to be some) where did you get the fabric for your DIY Stall Drapes? And what material did you use? I wouldn’t use mine more than a couple times a year so I don’t know that it is worth the investment in Sunbrella fabric - what do you think? I would LOVE to get them in purple - hence not being able to order them from SSTack…

Even just using them a couple of times a year, purple non-Sunbrella fabric (you’ll use sail cloth, or canvas of some sort) will fade like crazy. You’ll be left with lavender ones!

If you are going to make them, invest in the Sunbrella or the like and have them for years.

I’m sure there are other makers out there–doesn’t Dover make them?

I was just trying to price compare between making my own and having some made. The thing that concerns me about doing them myself is there will be a seam in them because I cannot find wide enough Subrella bolts sold to the public

Have you tried talking to an upholstery shop or a company that makes large canvas awnings? They might be able to order the wider fabric for you or sell you the yardage you need. I’ve gone that route, not with stall drapes but other horsey stuff, such as adhesive safety backing for my arena mirrors (had a bunch of nice large mirrors given to me free so was able to go the DIY route.) The local company was very helpful about it. Good luck.

fjordmom - Thanks for that idea - now to track down the shop LOL

Thanks for that link for drapes. The prices are beyond great.

If you cant work out your project as a DIY, why not take advantage of the great prices and then trim the drapes out in the color(s) you want?

Totally MHO of course, but purple drapes will fade and look a tad garish. Whereas a neutral color trimmed in purple, with a wooden plaque w/ farm name and purple tie backs will look sophisticated.

I made my drapes out of canvas duck cloth that I purchased at JoAnn’s, probably using a 50% off coupon. The only real issue with that is making sure that if you need more than one bolt (yes, buy the whole bolt), the colors between the bolts are a good match. They will fade at some point, I’m sure, but I’ve primarily used mine on indoor stabling, so they’ve not faded yet.

I wouldn’t worry about the seams - if you wander around and look at all the professionally done stuff, it generally has seams, too. It’s sometimes covered by adding vertical stripes, etc… but from what I’ve seen, the seams are usually there.

As far as Sunbrella goes, it’s expensive enough that you may be just as well off having drapes made - at least, this is what I found when I was looking. Professionally made drapes are often also treated to be fire-retardant/resistant (which is a requirement in some stabling). You can buy stuff to do this yourself, but it gets expensive.

Lastly, I agree with Lord Helpus about the purple drapes. I absolutely understand wanting to use purple (I’m REALLY picky about my shade of burgundy, which is why I made my drapes rather than purchasing from Schneiders), but I’ve seen navy fad and look terrible… I can only imagine that purple would look even worse.

And lastly, a picture of my drapes:https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=524524073779&set=a.524523190549.2029412.138800916&type=3&theater

The main valance I had made by The Clothes Horse, as they could do the piping and more importantly, the embroidery. Long-term overall, there I things I would/will change… but it works for me.

I also used The Clothes Horse for my banner. It is absolutely beautiful.

But, if $$ is a primary criteria, you can go with a plain banner and have a custom sign made in your colors and hang it on the panel next to the tack room door.

When not showing, the sign can be used in multiple ways around your home barn.

I bought Sunbrella on eBay for a great price. You can buy wide enough for no seams. I made enough to cover a 16 horse setup for under $300. That was 8 years ago and they are still going strong.
