DIY Tack Lockers

Has anyone used one of these

http://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-36-25in-H-x-34-5in-W-x-17-5in-D-Plastic-2-Shelf-Multi-Purpose-Base-Cabinet-in-Gray-221873/205438531

and converted it into a tack locker?

Just looking for some inexpensive storage options for my saddle and assorted “stuff”.

Thanks!!

It is only 17 1/2" deep, how would you fit your saddle in there? Standing up?

I was thinking it might fit sideways - saddle rack on the side, facing in - if that makes sense.

That seems kind of cozy too. Take a tape measure to your saddle when it is sitting on a rack. 17 1/2" gets eaten up really quickly.

With the plastic type cabinet (like you have linked) the other issue you have is finding a way to successfully mount a saddle rack in it.

Yeah, it might be.

I thought I might be able to use a single portable saddle rack and slip it in during “construction”. Not sure how wide the walls are - but it might work.

I have a very similar cupboard for all my “stuff”, but I do not store my saddle or bridle in it. It really wouldn’t fit well. I do love the cupboard for my grooming tote, helmet, paddock boots, chaps, etc. I first got it when I was doing self-care board. Had one for each horse (and my kids stuff too). When I built my own barn and took on boarders, I got enough of them that each boarder was assigned one as well a wall mounted saddle rack and 2, bridle hooks. That arrangement works well for everybody to have their essentials at hand for daily use, but avoids the otherwise ever-growing collection of clutter. My cupboards have a hole in the doors so that a padlock can be added, but I’ve never had to do so. Every once in a while, I’ll take stuff out, haul them outside and hose out any dirt and dust. Super easy.

An english saddle will fit, a western saddle won’t. A piece of landscape timber as a saddle rack, attached to the wall, and it slides into the cabinet thru a whole in the short side.

I thought about doing this, but the cost of one of these that was large enough to fit a saddle, etc was more than it cost me to buy the plans and build the “elite” tack trunk, which holds a saddle two bridles, a grooming kit, and has two shelves for blankets as well as a bandage lid. I looooove my trunk.

Pics of your trunk?

I’ve had success with this:

room for dressage saddle (sideways) and I got the shelving kit which also had hooks that I use for bridles/halters. Bought some cheap bins at target for blankets and wraps and I have managed to fit ALOT of stuff in it. Wind and waterproof (so far!)

I like this! Plus, it’s probably lot lighter (empty) than those big wooden tack lockers.

What kind of rack do you use for your saddle in this?

I have something similar to the Home Depot cabinet. I was able to add a couple wood shelves for my helmet, saddle pads, etc. I keep my saddle on a wheeling metal rack (made for saddles) and it fits inside perfectly.

I used something more like this for a tack locker for a while:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Keter-4-ft-x-2-ft-Woodland-Store-it-Out-Midi-Resin-Shed-211166/204330128

The one I used fit one of those generic metal saddle stands just fine.

FWIW, a friend used a landscape timber-type saddle rack in hers, and it eventually caused the walls to warp so her doors no longer closed correctly. I don’t think these lightweight sheds are designed to really handle a lot of weight in one place like that. If you’re going to do it, think through bracing/stabilizing the structure so it doesn’t skew over time.

I have seen some pics of old media cabinets transformed into tack lockers.
Regarding garage type storage units, what about the metal ones ? http://www.homedepot.com/b/Storage-Organization-Garage-Storage-Garage-Cabinets-Storage-Systems-Free-Standing-Cabinets/N-5yc1vZccyp

I have the plastic cabinets similar to the OP’s post in my tack room. Over the years they have gradually warped, and are hard to keep clean - the plastic seems to hold on to dirt.

I knew I could count on my fellow COTHers! You guys are so creative. And yes, soloud - we need to see some pics! I am not sure I can get the space for the larger, taller “cabinets”. I’d have to ask - there are several (wood) in the tack room I am currently in, so no space for another. But there are other tack rooms.

Many years ago, the early 90’s, large wooden tack lockers were popular in my
neck of Colorado and the barn I was it. About the size of a side by side refrigerator. Shelf near the top, two saddle racks, hooks on 3 sides of the area
under the top shelf and room for a plastic cabinet of drawers. Various racks on
the doors for more odds and ends. One of the boarder’s dad had made a bunch
of them for the boarders. Bought mine second hand because it’s owner was moving to a barn with built in lockers and would not need. Still holding my
junk after twenty five years.

I used a piece of an entertainment center as a home made locker once. Worked super, got it at The Dump

Turns out I won’t be able to “upgrade” to the larger cabinet type tack locker (like a side by side frig). No room at the inn. I’ll have to keep it to about the same size as a standard wood trunk - although it can be a tad taller. I can get my saddle into my current trunk - but, then I have little room for anything else. Unless I can figure out a way to add some storage underneath. Hmmmm

sophie - just the basic portable standing saddle rack like this one: http://www.doversaddlery.com/portable-saddle-stand/p/X1-2702/?eid=X18A00U1000&utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=CSE&utm_campaign=MerchantAdv&zmam=1460880&zmas=1&zmac=114&zmap=0002702000000X1-2702&mkwid=sdP3lyuTN&crid=60286600327&mp_kw=&mp_mt=&pdv=c&gclid=CJjB1MnVh8wCFQIcaQod6QEKYQ
