Do all of the big eq classes flat? I know the Maclay does and then like the combination of how you did o/f and how you did on the flat gives you your results. What about the medal, WIHS, and USET? And if they do flat, is it judged separately or not? Thank you!
USEF has a test of at least top 4 (could be flat but could be fences, 1-19 used) - so, there could be a flat phase as a test, just depends on judges preference.
WIHS is a two phased class, made up of a hunter phase (one hunter style round) and a jumper phase (with a time allowed). Phases are pinned separately but then also calculate an overall ranking as well
USET does have a flat phase.
obviously, state and zone based big eq classes can vary.
Far as USEF governed shows, Eq classes, like age group, offer both Eq over fences and Eq on the flat as single, separate classes. You can do either one or both.
Medal classes combine the flat and over fences to determine the Medal winner but some also additionally offer awards in each section but you MUST do both. Remember Medals have separate conditions and specifications that are different for each individual Medal, they are not part of the regular Eq division and there are many of them in different parts of the US.
That’s the short version. Depends on who is approving (rating) and running the show and those rules. Those can vary and some shows run independently and make up their own rules. There is no set national standard across the board for all shows other then those set by whoever rates the shows. You have to read the conditions in the prize list, entry booklet or online.
