I don’t think bossiness has any impact on nervousness or worry out on the trail, but has everything to do with “who is in control of the herd”. Personally, I think a bossy mare is a hazard in a group.
A while back I had a local rider who had begged and begged to come along with me. I was always doing a conditioning ride which I knew she couldn’t keep up on her QH mare, but after months of her trying to get together for a ride I relented and invited her, and two others, out for a nice relaxed hack. This person didn’t tell me she had a bossy mare (nor did her two friends), and during the course of the ride while we were trotting across a big field, my horse moved up alongside hers, about 3 feet away. In an instant her mare laid back her ears and kicked out a hind foot sideways at my horse. Twice!! My guy was quick enough to move away the first time, and really backed off at the second kick.
Wanna know the lady’s response? She turned around to look at me and said “Oh, she doesn’t like being passed”. Then she faced forward like nothing had happened.
That was it. No punishment for the mare, no apology for the kicks, or for putting my valuable endurance horse in danger by NOT telling me the mare was a kicker. No red in the tail, either.
Asshat.
Her friends were quietly apologetic about the incident, but I have a “one strike” rule. When she called again for another ride, I told her flat out no, and explained why. And that was that. She wasn’t going to change her horse’s behavior; and I wasn’t going to invite her for any more rides.
Incidentally, I saw a mare like this at the Biltmore endurance ride several years ago. Alpha creature that also “didn’t like being passed” and would kick faster and higher than you could blink. I was behind them (after the horse kicked out at me when I wanted to pass on the trail – the rider did NOT move over even after I asked!!) when Stagg Newman on Super came flying up. I let him pass me but when he went to pass the mare that animal kicked so high she just about took Stagg’s head off. Super did a slidding stop, and Stagg actually ducked his head. We had to wait until the trail opened for us to get past. The rider never said boo, nor did he correct his horse, or move aside to let us pass.
Of course, I got my revenge later but letting my guy stop to graze, letting the rider and his friend get in front, and then blasting past them moments later. I think I did that about 4-5 times while we were in the fields so that I had plenty of room to gallop past. Really pissed that mare off. Pissed them off, too, but they deserved it. I finally left them in the dirt after I’d had my fun.
