Toffee doesn’t seem to dream a lot, but Snickers does. He will frequently yelp or move his paws when he is asleep. Why do they do that? did he have a traumatic puppyhood? Should I wake him, or leave him be?
Let him be Im sure dogs dream…cats too.
My husband & I say our dog is "chasing bunnies " when she does that I only wake her if she seems distressed (maybe the bunnies are chasing her!)
My Great Dane dreams - a lot! I only wake him when he’s “running” in his sleep and the whole bed is shaking or if he is whining loudly. I generally just pat him and say his name and he stops … for a while.
They definitely dream. My dog barks, growls, runs etc in his sleep. Its so cute!
I love it when my dogs dream. Both of my girls will sometimes thump their tails in a clear wag when they are dreaming. I always wonder what is making them happy in their dreams. My Doberman (who is a real panty-waist in real life) likes to growl and bark in his sleep. I think he dreams about being the Doberman he wishes he could be!

Absolutely.
My dog has a very specific bark that he only gives when he’s hunting rabbits. I have no doubt that he is dreaming of rabbits when he makes that sound. (Although it’s so cute because he barks with his mouth shut). But you can can see his feet going a mile a minute so you know he’s on the chase.
My favorite, which isn’t very often, is when you see them wag their tail while dreaming. Usually it’s just hunting, but every now and then I wonder if they are dreaming about us.
My service dog in training dreams in her sleep everyday. She whimpers/barks, runs, and wags her tail. Funny thing is she is 5 months old and I have only heard her bark twice when awake. She is the strong silent type when awake.

All my dogs dream, but my late Beagle would BAY in his sleep…scared the bejeesus outta me on more than one occasion, because even with his mouth closed, and muffled ('cause he slept under the covers ) it was almost just as loud as it was outside in the field! We always knew he was dreaming about hunting…poor guy was too portly to do much running in his later years, and was rarely allowed off leash because he’d disappear for HOURS.
Well, I wa a bit worried…
but I guess it is ok for him to yelp and whimper. I was afraid if I woke him up it might be bad, but I guess it is ok to let him run free in his sleep. He is another one, that if he ran free in life, he would be gone gone gone!
I definitely think they dream. My 8yo English Mastiff barks, whimpers, runs in his sleep and will even “nurse” on my finger when he’s out cold. Guess they are never too old for puppy dreams! When he’s like that I can see he’s in REM sleep, he also snores quite loudly.
Can’t remember who, and don’t know how valid it is, but I was told that deep REM sleep is just as important to dogs as it is to us humans and we shouldn’t wake them up from their dreams.
Here’s a little article about it: http://www.sfgate.com/pets/askthevet/article/Dogs-experience-REM-sleep-and-hence-dreams-3191769.php
They definitely dream. I only wake mine up if they start howling in their sleep - lol!
Mine do! Especially my older dachshund. I love her dream-woofs. I do get paranoid that she’s having a nightmare sometimes, if I hear her whimper or yelp, and will wake her up… but generally I can restrain myself. (: I notice that whenever she has some sort of excitement or adventure, she seems to dream very intensely and loudly afterward… and they definitely seem to be reliving-the-magic dreams.
Yup, all my dogs dream, though the dobie a bit less. I have also caught my horse “running” in his dreams.

Apparently that dog sleep walks and even sleep attacks too!
Both my dogs and my cat dream. I’ve only ever seen the cat dream once (he was growling!) The dogs yip in their sleep sometimes - so funny! Not to mention the twitching paws.
I believe that they dream. In fact, I think there are some brain scan studies that prove it.
Unless it seems like it’s a “bad” dream, I leave them be. Sometimes, my older guy ( who has never been abused) will start really whimpering so I wake him up. But most of the time, it seems like our dogs are chasing things and having happy, tail wagging moments.
All my dogs have dreamt. TurboMutt can really get herself going and has been known to “talk” in her sleep. She’ll sometimes wake herself up and look around somewhat startled, as if just realizing it was a dream.
I think all mammals dream at some point. I was watching one of my mares the other day, flat out on her side in a patch of sunlight. Her ears, lips, and hooves were all twitching. The first twitch made me think she might have a fly, but when all systems kicked in, it was pretty obvious she was dreaming. Entertaining to watch.
Yes, my dog dreams and will emit small urgent barks, or sometimes–my favorite, as someone else mentioned–wag her tail in her dream–who is she seeing, greeting?
I once had the delightful experience of having a young foal fall asleep with her head in my lap (dam nearby)and nicker very softly while sleeping, and move her legs in slight running motions.
