People are that stupid. A girl at my barn, active in FFA, knew her saddle was made of calfskin, and was surprised to learn that leather comes from cows…

LOL I worked at a German restaurant once where the owner had a side of veal delivered daily and made all his own cutlets. His 23 year old son, the head waiter, apparently thought a “veal” was some random animal…because he did not know it was a baby cow.
^ haha that’s so funny, just last week we were at dinner with DH and my MIL (70 years old) and when she ordered veal I couldn’t help but say something. (I am TOTALLY fine with ppl ordering animal products, DH sometimes does, at restaurants, although we don’t have them in our home, but I really have a problem with veal-eaters, but I digress…) Anyway, she wanted to know if “veals” were endangered or something, since she knows some ppl are against eating them yet will eat cows or pigs or whatever. I never got her to really trust me that it was from a baby cow, I think now she thinks a “veal” is either a cow-like animal, slaughtered young, or a specific breed of cow designed to be extra delicious. She just assumed vegan DIL = crazy, blown out of proportion animal rights activist. And this is an educated worldly well-spoken woman.
You’d think horse folk might ask what PRP stands for… nevermind where it comes from.
PRP is just processed from blood.
Stem cells on the other hand can be prepared using bone marrow, which in the horse is usually collected from the sternum (sometimes the ilium). This is what we did with my horse-sternum. Generally easier collection in terms of inconvenience to the horse and healing (even though it’s kind of alarming to watch the needle) than using adipose tissue.
Hmm… could’ve sworn we spun it down from marrow pulled from the sternum at the clinic.
My memory isn’t what it once was, so…
I can’t remember, it was so long ago. My sister told me many esoteric things that I was unlikely to check until the topic should come up ---- and I would look like a fool.
Once again it is Debbie: 1, Pam: minus 100.
Please, let this thread die…
Sorry @Lord Helpus but I lol’d so hard, thank you for the laugh at your expense
Bone marrow is the major source of stem cells. Some of those cells leave the marrow and go into the bloodstream. You can collect stem cells from the peripheral blood, but takes a while to collect large amounts, or you take directly from the bone marrow from large bones.
FYI come at me bro with anyone saying anything other…I work in bone marrow transplants this is my thing.
Lord Helpus, you have me hysterically laughing so much that I just scared both the cats out of the room. This topic is even funnier to me as I actually just helped collect stem cells on 3 different horses last week.
Gullible little sisters of the world unite!
Uh, PRP stands for platelet rich PLASMA. Not platelet rich marrow. Stem cells = bone marrow. (Can be peripheral blood, but marrow is generally first choice.) Platelet rich plasma comes from blood. Because, natch, plasma is a component in whole blood.
nvrmnd.
It was so much easier for them (I have one too) back before the days of the internet… we just believed them.
Don’t feel bad. You are not the only one who had a big sister/brother who had fun with their siblings.
You started a thread that has been educational. Consider it a win in the end.
@Lord Helpus if it makes you feel better, I believed that dental floss was grown at farms in Montana thanks to my father. It wasn’t until I was close to college age that I figured out that was totally fictional and from a Frank Zappa song
When I was 5 years old my father told me horse radish was made from horses. Family can be so mean.
When I was young and watching my father play soccer, I asked my mother why “that man” (referee) was the only one wearing a black and white striped shirt. She said that he had just been released from jail and he had to wear the shirt so everyone could keep an eye on him.
Nothing as obscure as bone marrow in horses, but I believed her.
I could easily have fallen for the bone marrow ruse, especially in the days before the internet.
Mean relatives are ubiquitous. At least ours aren’t mean in the ways that are really hurtful…
This gave me a chuckle. As did the Far Side cartoon. So thanks
I was “that” older sister (I’m 6 years older). Had my little sister believing in the Easter Bunny until she was 11. Among other things…
I have a friend who I always thought quite intelligent and knowledgeable until she assured me repeatedly that birds have 4 legs, as well as wings. She eats turkey and chicken too!
