Do horses have marrow in their bones?

This is turning into a “of course” to “no way” discussion on Quora. I am in the “no” school of thought.

Yes, horses have marrow in their bones.

Of course they do; how else would they grow new blood cells?

You’re kidding, right?

All mammals have bone marrow. It’s (in simple terms) what produces new blood cells.

Of course they do.

…why would you think they wouldn’t?

Gaaaaaaaahhhhhh. Obviously I was misinformed by an older sister who loved telling me things that I would believe and then would make me look really stupid when I repeated the misinformation as if it was gospel.

One might think that, after 65 years, I might have learned my lesson. I am so damn gullible.

Please forgive me. I will never believe my sister again.

Are you serious?!?
How do you think they make new blood cells??

On the other side of the coin, I recall having a fascinating discussion with an x-ray tech at our local hospital who was unaware that animals have bones just like people, and that veterinarians can do/read imaging…she wanted to know if I was sure that animals have bones, because she’d never thought that they do…

Wow. How is that possible. Even if you’ve never had an animal that’s needed a radiograph the vet, don’t you cook? I wonder what she thought a t bone was. Or chicken wings.

Bone marrow is also part of the immune system.

Maybe she’s always been vegan?

Because, you know, animals don’t need a skeleton to hang those tendons, ligaments and muscles on.

Don’t rad techs have to take at least BASIC biology ?

Well, this is a scary discussion on so many levels…

That can’t be a true story…were you on pain killers? I’m sorry…no one can be that stupid. There must have been a subtle difference in this story - e.g. that she didn’t know animals had as many bones as a human or something…or some other fact, not that they didn’t have bones at all.

No worries. People here repeat things ad nauseum until they become “fact.”

And never took a biology course?

Many school rooms have a human skeleton standing in a corner.
Maybe we need to add skeleton models of gerbils/dogs/cats/horses/dinosaurs?

I admit it, I am very curious to what story your sister told you to explain her ‘fact’. Why did horses not need bone marrow?
