Are there any hunts in southern california? I’ve never been to one, but it’s on my life to do list and I actually have a horse that I’m fairly certain would take care of me.
Thanks so much!

I haven’t personally hunted with any of these, but there are three listed on the MFHA website.

I’m pretty sure there are places associated with the Santa Fe hunt that will rent horses as well. The barn where I ride at in Palos Verdes occasionally gets some of those horses in the off-season to use as school horses. I believe a woman from my barn has hunted her horse before, probably with the Santa Fe hunt, but I can try and find out for you if you wanted to contact her about her experience.
there is a hunt up by santa barbara in the santa ynez mountains. I knew a gal who would go once or twice a year, loved it!
I just joined the Santa Fe Hunt based in Temecula. Went out a few times last year and have been roading with them some through the off season.
They have a “hunt clinic” in October that was pretty informative. It’s how I hooked up with them.
It seems like a great group of folks and they are very welcoming.

Thank you so much for providing these links! This is exactly what I was looking for!

This is so exciting! I went to Santa Fe Hunt site and I can’t wait to become a member. I can hardly wait for the Fall.
Now I just need to combine my newfound love for riding in a sidesaddle with fox hunting. I’m just discovering a whole new side to equestrian life.
Thanks again!
So have I! I have only gone out twice but I have really enjoyed it, and my young mare has been wonderful. The hunt staff has been extremely welcoming. I don’t know if I’ll be able to join the hunt in the fall, but I do hope to cap once or twice at the fixtures closer to home.
SPLAT, do you have plans to get out there again any time soon? I was actually hoping to go this Sunday but have in-laws in town. The next Sunday I have free is 09Aug. It would be fun to meet some fellow COTH’ers in the area.
Aug 9th is first day of the Cuyamaca camping trip with the hunt. I’ll be at that and very much looking forward to it.
However, I’d love to meet up one of these days. I do try to make it out every couple of weeks - it’s just too much fun, even in the dust! Do you ever go mid-week?
Nah, can’t make it mid-week unless I take a day off. I would do that for a hunt, but not for regular roading.
I got the flyer for the camping trip and it does look like a ton of fun… just doesn’t work out for me these days to do multi-day outings (have a 7-month old baby). It is my (not so secret hope :D) that I will have “thrown” a horse-crazy girl-child and that in a few years, I’ll have someone to bring along for the fun!
anway- the 23rd and 30th of Aug are possibilities for me. Not that I wouldn’t head out there on my own again, but if possible it would be fun to coordinate with you and imnotclever

I’m available either one of those weekends! How exciting
Shall we try for the 30th? I am at a show on the 23rd. It’s scary to see that August has already booked itself. Siiiigh. - I’ll look forward to meeting you both in person.
Sounds like a plan to me! Can’t wait
Hey SPLAT and Imnotclever- are you guys still on for the 30th for hound exercises? I emailed Cheryl Reynolds yesterday and I am definitely going to be there. I also have the membership application for this coming season- I think I"m going to go for the social membership, which allows you to attend the opening and closing hunts and then two more during the season, as well as cap up to two more times. Works out to hunting about once a month, which is just perfect for me. Plus an invitation to all the social functions!
I’ll be there - absolutely! BTW, I have already joined as a social member. It seems like a good start and with a job and show schedule, I doubt I’ll get out more than that anyway. However, I have been assured that if I can’t live without it, I can upgrade. So… See you on the 30th?
I’ll definitely be there! I’ll send imnotclever an email just in case she’s not on here that much… she and I have since become FB friends
