Do I need a stock tie??

Okay, so my first recognized event is this coming week, and I have managed to gather practically everything I think I need except for a stock tie. I didn’t really think about it until now, and I am sort of panicking. It is too late to order one, so I’m just trying to figure out if I need one or not. The show shirt I will be wearing for dressage is pretty nice looking, it only has one little silver button and it snaps at the top. Will that be okay, or will I get marked down etc.? I am only showing at novice, if that makes a difference. Everyone I know that I have asked in the last day or so has told me I needed one, but I have read in a couple other places that they are optional. I just want to be sure, I don’t want something bad to happen last minute.

WORST case scenario I could buy one from a vendor at the show, if they even have them. Ugh.

If you are wearing a jacket you need EITHER
a stock
a choker
a tie.

At Novice, you are not required to wear a jacket.

If you ride without a jacket, you must ride WITHOUT neckwear, but with a long or short sleeved shirt with a collar, of conservative color, neatly tucked in.

I always rode in a snap “choker”/wrap collar that was just part of the show shirt because as a jumper rider convert it never occurred to me about a stock and no one suggested it to me. Then I just kept doing it because it didn’t make a difference. I rode through training level like that and don’t think I ever got marked down for it. Certainly never had a comment on it and managed to lead after dressage a time or two with it (and no braids, shock/horror). So I think as long as you have one of those wrap collars or something you’ll be fine without a stock tie.

In my second recognized event, I was in the Senior BN Rider division. I did my dressage test in a jacket with no neckwear - I was at the event alone and scrambling and forgot it. Anyway, after my final halt the judge asked me to approach her box. Naturally my heart dropped, and she informed me (not very nicely) that I could be eliminated for not wearing neck ware. After she looked at the rule book and told me it was at the judges discretion and so I would be allowed to proceed.

If I were you, I’d buy one (or use a choker/collar or something) at the event or don’t wear your jacket.

Is it a one day show? If so, attire rules are much more flexible, though ime most people don’t take full advantage of the flexibility for dressage.
. Still, short answer, no, stock not required.

Choker/collar but not a stock tie only wear stock tie w/ jacket

Also only wear a choker with a jacket. No jacket ==> no neckwear. Shirt must have a collar but that’s not neckwear. I always have a choker in my suit bag even if I plan to wear a stock because if I’m late, I’m not fussing with a stock! When I’m at P ok, but below? meh! Unless it’s cold…

Rules are as stated above. Most people will wear a jacket and stock, unless weather causes the show to waive jackets. (Some people will still wear them then; I am not one of those people.

There was more to that post but it disappeared.

And that one. I give up.
