Do my stirrup flaps look too long?

I just got this CWD and it’s a 3 L, im 5’2 so let me know what you think! https://www.flickr.com/photos/194952074@N03/51864865809/sizes/o/

Really need to see it on the horse. But the seat looks really small for you.

Like that, yes, they look too long and I agree that the seat looks too small but as stated above, need to see it on a horse with you sitting in it.

For reference, I’m also 5’2" and in CWD, I’m a 1L or 2C flap (in a 17.5" seat). 3L is a long flap, for long legs. Short flaps are for short legs, and my friend, we are short.

Maybe you still have some growing to do and this one will fit you in a while. That ship has sailed for me. But if that’s the case, you might be able to make do in the meantime if it rides ok to you.

Will it make a big difference if i try it while riding? I ride in a 3 L PJ saddle right now so that’s why i thought it would be fine!

As it appears here, this seat is too small. you are sitting on the cantle if you skooch forward your knee over rides the knee roll, it s already a bit to forward .

I have to agree with what everyone else has pretty much said. The seat appears to be too small and if you scooted your seat closer to the pommel, then your knee will go over the edge of the flap. And yes, the flap itself does look a little long for your calf.

It could-- maybe– look different if you were dressed in riding clothes and if you were actually sitting on a horse.

Different brands have different designations for their flaps, and they generally also change with seat size, so a 3L in one brand doesn’t necessarily translate to the same in another. In CWD, L is the long/straight flap shape, and 3 is considered “long” (2 being average, 1 being short). C flaps are a bit shorter and a bit more forward in the same number-size.

I’m not familiar with the PJ saddle flap configurations, but it might be helpful if you measure the flap dimensions on both and compare. Flap length is the distance from the stirrup bar to the bottom of the flap, and flap width is the distance horizontally across the widest part of the flap.

Is the seat size the same between the two? That will also factor in. Flap sizes, definitely in the French brands and I’m guessing probably also for PJs, are relative to the seat size. So, a 3L flap in a 17" CWD will be both shorter and narrower than a 3L flap in the same model 17.5" CWD.

Speaking of seat sizes, a couple folks have mentioned it looks small and is pushing your knee to the front of the flap. I think the angle makes it hard to tell whether the seat is actually too small for you, since we’re sort of looking up at your bum and maybe a little from the front. I think your knee coming close to the front of the flap is also a function of the flap being too long for you. If you can imagine shifting the whole flap up (or your whole leg down), your knee would be in a much better spot.

Your stirrups might also be a little shorter here than when you’re actually riding, or maybe your heel is not down as much as usual since you’re riding a chair in socks. (No judgement!)

If you’re a teenager and your parents are tall or leggy, this saddle gives you some room to grow. If not, I do think the flap is at least too long, and it’s too hard to tell whether the seat fits from this angle.

I ride in a 17 in the PJ also and it seems like that seat fits me better than this one too. I’ll try to take a better picture tomorrow w it on my horse

Also im 24 so definitely done growing  If you guys think i should re sell it please let me know

Perhaps measure the seat (if you haven’t) to confirm it is a 17.5" seat; also what is the flap length?

Is there a tack shop handy that you can go sit in a few other saddles just to get an idea of how they fit?
How does the saddle fit your horse?

Same here… 5’1-5’2… about 125 lbs. Longer in thigh. In a 17" 2C.
For reference, friends that are 5’6-5’7 are in 3L’s.

Send us a picture on a horse. From this photo, yes, the flaps look way too long. They should hit you about 1/3 - 1/2 of the way down your calf.

But your stirrups also look too short, so there’s that.

Definitely try it on your horse before you make a decision. Saddles can fit the rider completely differently when on a stand vs. a horse. Kudos to you for being able to stay upright on those chairs. I would have needed an EMT after that! Seriously, though, IMO the most important issue here is what your balance is like in the saddle on the horse (assuming the saddle also fits said horse). Cosmetically, a flap may look a bit long, etc… but the best way to determine if it suits is how you ride in it.

Is it even on a stand?
Looks to be on the back of a chair, which is not good for a saddle, last I checked.

Yes, it is, which is why I congratulated her on her balance. I really don’t think I could pull that off!

Lol yes it is i don’t have a saddle stand right now and i didn’t put all my weight on it which is why it looks like im sitting awkwardly. I will give you guys an update when i try it on a horse later this week
