Do Race Horses Need Jockeys? WSJ article

Have a fun read. They suggested that maybe they could be trained to finish the race by themselves or perhaps robots could be designed to ride them instead. Hah! Going out to the barn now to potty train mine so I don’t have to do stalls.

In the Cajun match races, McNamara said owners who didn’t use jockeys would hedge their bets by tying beer cans filled with rocks to the horses’ manes to scare them into running harder or, in some cases, fastening on a live chicken.
:lol::lol::lol:

I thought there was a hobby type of pony race with robot jockeys.

I remember someone on the racing forum (Sorry whoever- I forgot your name) posted that the insiration for robot jockys came from an innovative trainer who was peeved at his jockeys/exersize riders not showing up on time and made a remote controlled robot jocky and showed it to them while emphasizing 'You can be replaced."

I saw camel racing a few years ago in the UAE with robot jockeys. They are vaguely human-shaped and strapped to the camels with a whip in one arm. The trainers have remote controls so that they can decide when to use the whip. The track was huge, so the trainers drove along the inside rail in SUVs. Maybe the range on the remotes wasn’t great? Apparently children were used before the robots (including very young children), but as the area was opening up to Western influence, they switched to the robots. Seemed to work for them, but definitely didn’t have the same kind of strategy/“moves” that a horse race entails.

One of the stranger things I’ve ever seen! :slight_smile:
