Just saw an ad for them. Wanted to check with the real world (lol) to see if they are a gimmick or if they actually work .
I used one on a bad cut that was delayed in getting vet care. I had to pull them up every day, they droop down pretty fast-- but it healed cleanly and barely scarred- and it was so deep I could stuck my thumb in to the first knuckle. I would use them again.
I got the Silver Whinnys to try when my (delicate flower) chestnut with white legs got scratches and I could not get them to heal. Although he is fine with wrapped legs, fly boots, galloping boots, etc., he could not stand having the Silver Whinnys on. The owners of the company were super helpful and tried to come up with strategies to get my guy used to the socks, but he tried to kick the barn down every time I put them on.
Since the scratches were primarily on his pastern, I cut the socks into 4"-5" pieces and just put them over the pastern, and he was fine with that. I have since determined that he’s a little sensitive to anything with silver (sprays, gel, etc.) on his legs, so I don’t think his negative reaction was to the socks, but rather the silver. The sock pieces were very helpful in getting the scratches healed up, and I now put them on any time I see a hint of grunge and it always clears up quickly.
Are they reusable?
Yes they are. Check out his site. Lots of info on use and care. They should be changed every 24 hours to keep them fresh and staying up. But they’re washable and from everything I can tell they’ll last a long time. I have not used them yet but will be ordering for my scratches buddy.
I have a chronic scratches girl and I loved the sox! They are kind of a pain, and you will have to pull them up everynight but they did seem to help her a lot. And quite frankly, I was done trying anything else and these were so much easier. They fray up a bit at the bottom, but they still helped. Her scratches went down at least 75% wearing them. They are not really suitable for a horse in heavy mud though. As an aside, they are also great compression stockings. Her legs were tighter than ever while wearing them!
