Do you mow/weedwack or spray grass killer on fence lines?

As the headline says, what do you do and why?

If you spray what do you use? How long does it last?

Any other recommendations for keeping a neat fence line welcome!

I spray and use Round Up. I only have to do this every few months during the growing season.

We spray (something that kills everything like Round Up) around the fence posts and mow along the fence line. I believe he sprays a couple of times during the summer.

Mr. Trub’s lawn mower has a really wide deck so it is easy to zip along under the fence.

Weedwhack perimeter fencelines (although not every time we mow), and spray with Round Up a couple of times during the season. To keep out dogs, our perimeter fencing goes all the way down to the ground, so it can’t simply be mowed under.

Our cross-fencing is Horseguard electric, well off the ground surface, so easy to mow underneath from both sides and make it look decent. Mowing from both sides of the fenceline/posts means we don’t need to weedwhack the posts often. We want our place to look nice and as though we care, but are not aiming for park-like.

I spray my fence lines with this https://www.amazon.com/Compare-N-Save-Concentrate-41-Percent-Glyphosate-1-Gallon/dp/B00ARKS3XO/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_86_bs_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=54089GFYEEJEMR656BE5

A lot less expensive than RoundUp and it has worked just as well for me.

We spray with a vegetation killer on the fence line at the beginning of the season with follow ups as needed.

Yes, mostly just like above.

G.

I weedwack the fence line then mow outside the field. Normally only need to do it a few times a year with the growing season here.

I spray. Usually Round-Up, sometimes with 2,4-D or triclopyr.

Make sure you use the right product and a sufficient concentration to kill whatever weeds you’ve got growing. For example, I have a big problem with Rubus spp. (i.e. blackberry, dewberry, raspberry, briars). A Round-Up mix sufficient to kill grass and some “softer” weeds barely makes a dent in the Rubus, which is tougher to kill because of its rhizomes.

@pds I’m definitely going to try that. Sounds fantastic! Thanks!

I buy the big jug of “vegetation killer” from Tractor Supply and dilute it to the strongest recommended dose. Sprayed my first round last weekend, will do so every few months as needed for the super powered Bermuda in North Texas. I also have a push behind string trimmer that is so much easier on your back than carrying a handheld weed wacker!

Will definitely look into this. And a push behind trimmer sounds much better than the handheld.

I agree with the walk behind trimmer. It does a beautiful job!

Weed wack and mow. No spraying just fence lines. we do spray weed killer.

I get DH to spray the fence lines, he couldn’t whack with his shoulder and I cant with my back…so spray it is. We also get the stuff from TSC. Our fences also go to the ground to prevent dogs and coyotes from just walking in. Once or twice a year is all it takes. But now I want a walk behind trimmer, recommendations on brands anyone?

We bought a Husqvarna last year and have been happy with it. It’s pretty easy to maneuver.

Are these things safe for the horses? We’re bringing our horses home in 2 weeks (AHHHH!!!) and we’ve got a bunch of undesirable 7-minute itch and stinging nettle and thistle in areas of our pasture - would love to kill 'em without a risk to the horses.

Some herbicides require 48 hours before a horse can be put back in the pasture. I do this and the horses don’t bother the weeds. Just find out what weed killer works best on your particular weed. I search Amazon and Google by the chemical name vs brand name and usually can find the cheapest rate. For example, I search Tryclopyr (sp). vs Confront or Remedy (brand names). Good luck!

If you only want to spray 1 time per year, I recommend Ortho GroundClear. It kills existing weeds and prevents new ones from growing.

Another weed whack and mow under the fence (25 acres of fencers/cross-fence).

The only place DH is allowed and to use weed killer is the fence along the road, and edge of the road which is a steep drop off. If we don’t put the weed killer down, the county will. That area is already ruined from blacktop materials as it is.
