All purpose. Close contact aren’t really made to sit in, you know?
I’d still be using my close contact, 1971 model Crosby Prix des Nations if it fit current stock. The even older Stubben Siegfried fits one, the newer all purpose fits the other. Sigh.
All purpose. I use my 25 year old Passier or a Bates AP.
Close contact. When you’re galloping around/jumping around, you’re hardly ‘sitting’. : o )
You see everything. More ap than cc, but plenty of cc.
Close contact but it was designed specifically for riding XC courses.
Close Contact. Mr. SSR and I (when astride) both currently hunt in a Bruno Delgrange PJ Original, and we have also hunted in Hermes, Butet, and Antares saddles.
Whatever is comfortable for you ! Most everyone I know rides in an all-purpose with a deeper seat, but I am still in my old, favorite Crosby PDN close contact . . . just what I’m used to.

I was about to say the opposite - whatever is comfortable for the horse!
I prefer my close contact saddle for moving at speed, but an all-purpose saddle spreads the load probably a little more evenly, so is probably nicer for the horse.
My choices…Passier All Purpose, Passier Military II and Stubben Lorelei…very old school.
I find most all purpose saddles to be too thick and feel indecure in them. I love* my Butet but it doesn’t fit that many horses so use an Antares with a little knee.
A deep seat hurts my lower back.
Close contact. (Properly fitted to the horse)
Which is a little odd because I used to like nice big fat kneerolls and a deep seat. Now that type of saddle fries my back in short order. Go figure.
If you’re looking at saddles I’d say go with the saddle that fits you and your horse, don’t focus on type, brand, or trend.

I hunt in my monoflap saddles. Love them! I have 2: amerigo pinerolo: 1st one I purchased that fit my huge OTTB with the sharksfin withers (a great ebay find). It’s a medium narrow…thus i had to buy another saddle for my wide wb. I ended up with an Amerigo Vega. Of the 2, that one is softer.
i can ride both saddles all day and be very comfortable. I also feel both really keep me in the saddle. both fit horses perfectly. only draw back.no D-rings for sandwich box.
Had one made to suit, with a padded seat, no knee rolls, stirrups where I want them, and extra nice panels for the horse. You can go for days in it.
All purpose. Old Berney Brothers.
I would go in what is most comfortable for you and your horse. No reason why you can’t have the best of both worlds. If you are buying used most places will let you try them. If you are buying new most dealers have a demo. I love my prestige monoflap, but not everybody does. My boyfriend loves his stueben and I think it is hard as a rock. I find with saddles it can be a very personal thing.

You do realise that it’s a relatively quick and easy task for a good saddler to take your saddle apart and pop in D-rings where required? Just a thought.

I do know that. No good saddler in the area, I will need to ship…and I use and need both my saddles…so No chance of me going without a saddle for a few weeks for a simple task.
