Do you recognize this horse? Gray / Oldenburg / Mare / Old Broken Jaw

I purchased a lovely mare a few months ago that I am just now getting around to running some history on. I know that I can send in her info and photos to the Oldenburg Association, which I will do eventually but figured i’d post her photos here and see if anyone recognized her.

She’s probably a bit aged, I was told 12 when I brought her in and then told 20’s when I had her vetted, her teeth have worn down to the point that you can’t use them to determine age. She has what the vet believes to be a healed but at one time broken jaw which looks like it was done from being caught in the crossties some time ago. Grey, about 16.1 maybe 16 hands, the cutest pink nose with big eyes. She clearly knows what she is doing jumping the bigger fences and I believe at some point she was doing the bigger jumpers - however after a vetting we decided it was best to allow her to do smaller jumps, she will enjoy the year in the short stirrup with a child. I am ASSUMING this was someones jumper at one time that had an injury (could be the jaw, could be the number of other things that showed up in the vetting), was sent to pasture or to be a broodmare, then was purchased once she was “sound” and resold again.

Not trying to figure out who she is for resale purposes, she won’t be going anywhere! Just trying to figure out who the horse is and a bit about her history. Here are some photos of her from when she came in and a couple from the other day. Either way she is loved, and now has a fantastic home where she is welcome to live the rest of her life should all go as I hope.

She is currently here with me in California however none of my southern CA friends had any clues. She is branded (Oldenburg) and was imported. Her number is 20.

I realize that the horse may have come from any part of the country, but it would be helpful to know what general area you’re in.

Don’t have any info on your mare, but just wanted to chime in and say she has just the sweetest expression. I will be very surprised if you don’t find someone who remembers her. She looks like one of those rare saints who would babysit even the tiniest/most timid of teeny tiny riders. So happy you found her and realize the kindness of a true forever home.

Thank you, she is a gem. I would have done just about anything to have this mare in her younger years, whenever that was.

“20” under her brand will correspond to the next to last two digits in her registration number. If you knew the year she was born, and/or name of sire or dam, the office could possibly do a database search and determine who she is. Without more information, such a search is near impossible, and I doubt they would even want to undertake it (enormously time-consuming).

At any rate, God Bless You for giving her a soft landing.

So that 20 is going to be part of her “life #” (registration #) with the oldenburger registry back in Germany. You can contact them with a description of the mare and estimated age, and narrow down the possibilities. Would be great if she goes back to Inschallah, the French Anglo-Arabian who was purchased by the burgermeister of Oldenburg and graded into the Oldenburg registry. He stamped his grey colour on a lot of horses. (and stamped his dressage movements as well.)

Not as easy as you make it sound. See my post #7. They have to have a narrower window for age, and/or other info such as name of sire or dam. They can’t and won’t do a database search spanning 8-10 years looking for “grey fillies of unknown breeding with #20 in next to last two positions of registration number.” It would be very time-consuming, and even if they did it, they would likely get dozens and dozens of hits. It would be near impossible to figure out precisely who she is without a lot of sleuthing, which the office doesn’t have time to do.

Believe me, I have been through this process quite a few times, and there is only so much they can and will do.

Not a great # of oldenburg foals are born in Germany each year.
Of the # born, some die, some are culled, yes that means put down and eaten, and some do not pass inspection and therefore are not branded.

So then of the foals who do get branded, how many have that white unterlippe? Not many. Grey with white unterlippe went right on their papers 20 years ago. And a filly/mare.

And the guys who work at the registry sprechen English as well as any of us, and usually help with searching for horses’ identities. My horse came with his papers, but when I sought to find his mutter as they say, I contained his registry with her name and breeder and her registry # and the men tried to find her for me.

Now my horse is not registered oldenburg, but his maternal grandsire was Inschallah. My horse is grey and white, and has that white unterlippe. So I’d think that Inschallah might be very close up in OP’s mare’s breeding. That big dark eye also with the white lashes and all.

OP, email the registry and they can help narrow down the mares that your horse might be. You might find out who your mare is. Always fun to find out what your mare went through before you got her.

Pending her color at the time of registry… she may or may not had been greying (foals are not born grey). So what was her base color at the time of branding/registration?

There are sooooo many grey stallions. The Oldenburg has many C line Holst influence (among other grey lines) and could just as easily be grey from Capital or any other grey from sire or dam line.

Cloudy - I am well aware the folks in the office in Germany have fairly good English. I have worked pretty closely with them for nearly 20 years now on various issues and events, and I am in contact with them on a weekly - sometimes daily - basis. I have also worked with them numerous times on database searches, trying to ID some horse in North America because some idiot person tossed the registration papers. Believe me when I say, they are not very keen about jumping on a identity search with so little concrete info to go on. Again - IT IS TIME CONSUMING, and the fewer data points there are, the more time consuming it becomes. Those folks all stay pretty darned busy handling the normal aspects of their jobs, so getting them to spend time looking for a needle in a haystack is not so easy. There has been talk of charging a fee for this type of service, and while it might be a fairly reasonable amount for a simple search, more complicated searches (such as the one that involve OP’s mare) could get quite costly.

Also - YOUR situation was totally different. You knew your horse’s registration number - it was easy-peasy to plug that number into the database and find your horse’s record. OP has no clue what her mare’s number is, other than “20” near the tail end of the number. As I said earlier - since she doesn’t have a YOB for the mare, the search becomes nearly impossible.
