I had a great first day out hunting today.
I was wondering if people wrap their horses legs after hunting.
We were out about two and half hours.
We did a bit of everyting; walk, trot, canter, gallop, but no jumping.
how long a ride home?
would you wrap for an equal ride home from a show with equal hrs of warm up and classes?
I always use shipping boots to go home if the ride is less than about 3 hours. If it’s longer, I wrap with blue gel underneath the wrap, but the wraps come off when we get home because my horses go out.
If they were going to stay in or we had jumped quite a bit on hard ground I would probably poultice, but no I don’t usually wrap. I would wrap if they had to stay in that night, as at a show where the stabling is usually on hard ground.
That said, I do try to keep my horses at the appropriate fitness level for what i ask them to do, and if we are guests let’s say at another hunt where the territory may be more demanding or something I would tailor what we are doing.
yes!
I take care of my guy’s legs the same way I would if it was after X-Country. I try to put liniment on if he doesn’t have any nicks on his legs. I just leave them on until I get home, then I take them off since my horse will be laying down snoozing until dinner time.
I can’t wait until the dr. lets me ride or workout again! Hunting season is almost here and my horse has been keeping his eyes on the trailer, making sure it doesn’t leave without him! Thank god he has people lining up begging to ride him or else he’d be getting as out of shape as me… though no one but me is crazy enough to ride him outside of an arena.
I’ll poultice after a hard day.
Not sure which you mean, but I never wrap to trailer and rarely wrap (poultice or green jelly) after hunting. ‘Hard day’ can be hard to define- a couple of hours in really tough going, deep plough or lots of rocks or lots of up and down mountains might create a need…but in east coast country I’ve hunted, it’d be 4 hours or more of really hard going, generally.
I never wrap
My horses go out when they get home.
Yes and No. If I am not home and the horses will stay in for the night yes they get raped. I will also rap if we had a hard long day and I am going to be more then two hours at breakfast and driving home.
If we are close to home they just go out and play around in there filed. If we have a really tuff day I have been know to poultice and put on polo raps and turn them out for the night.
No. And not sure I know anyone that does. Pretty rare to wrap after hunting; rarer still to wrap for shipping 'round these parts. Au naturel is how most horses go around here.
No. I just turn them out.
I don’t wrap to ship home but yes, I always give them a bath and wrap after they get home. Usually they get a bran mash too and the day after hunting off.
Mine get turned out once home so I don’t wrap. If they had to stay in stalls I would.
Nope!
Turn them out after a hose off. Never, ever wrap. Don’t believe in it. Do put protective ones on to trailer; learned about that the hard way. But most foxhunters around here don’t. And most don’t do therapeutic wraps either.
Kinda feel like a lotta that wrapping is to make the owner feel better not the horse! Eventers & race horse people really love it tho’. I don’t get it…horse runs 1-2 miles & gets treated like he’s injured! Endurance riders ride miles & miles and do they usually wrap!!! Don’t think so!!!
Don’t get me started on my "hot house flower"s commentary!! And my “if he’s THAT unsound then WHY are you hunting him?!” speech!!
But hey, whatever floats your boat! Few horses ever died from being fussed over!!

yes they get raped.[/QUOTE]
I hope not! :c)
I have yet to have to wrap a horse after hunting, usually the horses that I’ve hunted were bathed and turned out, depending on the weather of course…
I am one of those former racetrackers, and we usually had most of our horses done up in fours or two’s every day, except for the young horses who were not running. We not only wrap legs for problems, but for protection in the stalls. However, my OTTB’s that I have at home are rarely wrapped, unless there is an issue going on.
I could see myself possibly wrapping after hunting if I had ridden really hard, and the horse did have some small issues, of course, I would never hunt or ride an unsound horse. I will pack feet after hunting or any exsesive excerise if the ground is hard.

Seriously!! I was ready to call the ASPCA on you!!
oh, ya…wraps…
I did a 10 mile hunter pace today. Up and down hills, jumps…so tonight I wrapped. He had to be stalled…
Before and after every ride regardless of how short or long my horse gets Absorbine Veterinary liniment gel or Sore no More gel massaged onto all fours. My 16yr old horse has never in the 3 years I’ve had him come up sore or puffy as the result of a long/hard ride so I dont’ see a reason to wrap.
Maybe it’s just luck or maybe it’s the liniment.
My horse is turned out 24/7 and I tend to be of the school of thought that excessive “babying” of the legs leads to weak legs that are more prone to injury when asked to perform on various terrain. That said, if my horses were stalled then I probably would have a different opinion:D.
As far as shipping I use protective boots but can certainly understand the need for bells/wraps long distance.
