Does anyone else offer stud fees this way???

http://www.zuchthof-hampe.de/e-deckhengste.html

Thought this was a very interesting concept that I havent seen done over here at all - a small stud fee up front, and then when the mare is checked in foal, the balance is due - sort of modelled along the same basis of TB and SB breeders

Here is their list of stallions as well - some very nice offerings at some very nice prices!

I am cooperating with the best known breeding stations:

Visschedijk (Netherlands) - Team Nijhof (Netherlands) - Intermizoo (Italy) - Völz (Germany) - De Wiemselbach (Netherlands) - Landgestüt Redefin (Germany) - Equimedic (Belgium)

So I am able to offer a wide selection of world-class stallions as well as definite breeding-friendly conditions.

Have we seen this concept over here with anyone yet?

Yes, Lodbergen is similar.
For example:
Don Gregory - 400E when breeding, additional 400E when confirmed pregnant.
They have a great line-up, including Don Gregory, Rohdiamont, Coleur Rubin, Rubin Royal, Rubin Cortez, Dante Weltino - and more super guys.

Sunnydays - is that over here in North America or over in Eurpoe still?

I think Europe, hence the E for Euro. It is fresh semen.

Mom & Dad tried it in the 80’s & 90’s. Non payment was the usual pattern of how things finally turned out, sorry to say. Or lies of the mares not being in foal/stallion(s) are infertile/etc and that was in state, out of state or out of the country collections, live cover situations…didn’t matter.

AFAIK it’s pretty much standard procedure to ask for a fee for the mating, then another fee if the mare is in foal.

Options that I know of are “No foal, free return” (where you take your mare back to the stallion for free) and “no foal, half fee return” (where you pay half the stud fee the second time), some studs charge a boarding fee for the mare, but not for the breeding if she doesn’t get in foal.

Did you require a vet certificate as to the “not-in-foal” situation?

I did this deal with two stallion owners so far and it worked great. Being self-employed means an unsteady flow of income, and being able to cut the payment in two made for an easy peasy situation for me to juggle financially.

Love this option personnally. But I am in the honest bunch.

Ive also offered “creative financing” to some Mare Owners - in todays economy you simply have to do it to make it work out for them

And touch wood - I have dealt with nothing but honest people. No chasing for money, no bounced cheques, no money excuses - everything just flowed very very smoothly from beginning to end. They appreciated the flexibility and I appreciated their business, so it was win/win for everyone

I think the very nonchalant attitude about registration papers in some segments of the market – particularly the very large hunter market - makes it too easy for dishonest MOs to scam SOs out of any balance due for a breeding.

There are also a few organizations out there that register foals without requiring an original breeding certificate signed by the SO, so unscrupulous MOs can even get registered foals without satisfying their financial obligations to the SO.

In general, I am not sure it is a good option for most SOs in North America.

The SO I dealt with was very kind and allowed me to do payments spread out. It was easier financially than paying one chunk up front. The balance was just due before the foal arrived.

Then again, there would be little value/incentive for an unregistered Arabian foal (what mine is), and without the SO’s signature, no way to register her, so maybe that makes a difference on stallion owner policies.

I had a stallion owner do this for me (non-approved AHS). Mare biopsied IIB so I paid a cover fee and the rest when the she foaled. Stallion was aging so worked out for both of us.
