Does anyone else remember the disney horse movie "Flash?"

This movie popped into my head last night because the man who rode his horse from SC to FL reminded me of it…it was a movie from 1997 that was shown on the Disney channel regularly in which the boy rides the horse from GA to NY.

Does anyone else remember this movie? It is on YouTube so I watched it last night. If anyone else remembers it, I’d like to discuss some things about it, such as how a horse that is 2 years old is getting second place at combined training events.

Is that the movie with the cute kid with the realistic southern accent and the cute chestnut horse? If so, I remember it vaguely. I remember a race, not combined training, though, so maybe these are two different movies.

The story of the SC guy riding to FL was to me like nightmare version of a wonderful book I read 50-something years ago, Ride a White Horse. That horse’s name was Trigger, too.

Yep, that’s the one! the cute kid was a young Lucas Black. The full thing is on YouTube and it’s only an hour and half long, so if you’re looking to fill some space some evening or weekend it’s not a total waste of time–if you can overlook some unrealistic horse things, of course.

I’ll have to see if I can find that book you mention.

Yes! We taped it off TV onto a VHS and wore that thing out. I think my nieces and nephews might still watch it occasionally.

I should find it for my son. He might like it.

He’s a movie horse! A Disney movie horse! That’s how!

I had forgotten the horse trials sequence. Have you seen this site? –

I think the movie deserves a better review, but this does mention the horse trials. I’ll catch it on YouTube one night – glad it’s there. Viewers reviewing it about 10 years ago were sad it wasn’t out on DVD; I wish I could contact them now to tell them it’s on YouTube now – hopefully they already know.

Ride a White Horse was published in Europe (and maybe the UK) as Trigger in Europe. My local library had a copy back in the '60s.

Yes, I did read that review of it last night before I found it on youtube! It cracked me up.

It unfortunately does not come on DVD, but the VHS can still be purchased on Amazon. The movie has mostly glowing reviews, but there are a concerning amount of people who think it’s realistic that a two year old horse can do all that…

Oh man! I have a very vivid memory from childhood of being at my grandmother’s house and being forced to take a bath during the middle of this movie.
It was one of my favorites!! So heartless

I also stumbled upon it on Youtube and was so excited to watch it again! One of the least terrible horse movies of my childhood.

Haha!!! Used to watch that movie all the time!!!

Glad I’m not the only one with fond memories of this movie

It did kind of irk me that he faithfully wore a helmet every time he rode his bike but never wore a helmet riding the horse–although his friend always rode with a helmet. I was amused that his friend was played by Shawn Toovey. I am a big Dr. Quinn fan, but I wasn’t at the time I watched it as a kid so I was shocked to learn that little Brian Cooper was in the movie, lol.

I loved that movie as a kid! I don’t remember combined training (or the horse only being 2), but admittedly it’s been probably close to 2 decades since I’ve seen it, so my memory is hazy.

I’m happy to hear it’s on YouTube! I’m just about to start my maternity leave - I know what movie I’ll be watching first while I wait for the baby to pop out!

Funny, I also totally did not remember the combined training part or that the horse was only two.

There are some good lines that I think lot’s of us could apply to our own lives from the movie though. Here are some examples:

Husband: “We don’t need another horse.”
You: “But he’s cheaper than a computer and the coolest thing I’ve ever seen!”

Potential Employer: “Why should I hire you?”
You: “I can do fourteen chin ups!”

(This will make more sense to you (maybe) after you watch the movie

Tad: You have to let me ride you, Flash, I’m going to take you to a dressage and jumping competition next month.

Good news, it only takes a month from hopping on a horse for the first time to get them successfully going at a big competition!

Not only does Tad prepare him for that competition in a mere month, but all told the horse was first saddled no more than 6 months before that (shortly after the he leaves on his big journey they say the horse is "about 2.5 years old). So MAXIMUM six months of being sat on, and one month of competition prep.

Tad’s father is understandably very angry about the second place finish though. One month should have given Tad plenty of time to kick all the butt.

I started to watch it last night (didn’t have time to watch it all then) and the opening credits music reminded me at little of the Man From Snowy River theme. Cool – the man who composed it also worked on Snowy River!

I will try to watch the whole thing this weekend.

I try to forget bad horse movies - there are so many of them.

Have another gander at the thread. We are talking about what is, to us, a beloved movie. We don’t want to forget it!

Sigh… yes, I remember. And I remember that the horse was off/lame through most of the movie. Rather spoiled it for me. He was also quite under weight. Not the typical well done Disney film was my impression at the time.

That’s what I meant - I’ve seen it, found it very annoying, tried to forget it.
