What a shame about the Número Uno semen. Great horse with great offspring. Too bad you had to learn the expensive way. :(. Does his semen come with a LFG?
a few places do sell it with an LFG… but the costs of inseminating over and over again might get on the nerves which is making me shy away to some extent… I’m still considering him since he would be such an awesome match for my mare…
How much would it cost to do in vitro fertilization with the most modern sperm injection techniques? Would it be cost prohibitive?
I think at that point you might be better off buying a foal. You would know exactly what you are getting for your money.
Worker Bee
My understanding is that the owner of Número UNO will no longer give a LFG. And bluemoonfarms is correct. We could have flown to the Netherlands and purchased a live foal with what we spent having our horse at Petersen Smith for four months… Also inquired about ICSI (intracytoplasmic semen injection). The veterinarian felt that since the mare had NO fertility issues that possibly there is an allergic rejection of the occyte to the extender in the frozen semen and that would also fail in my horse.

3 doses VDL Harley semen did not yield a pregnancy in a very fertile mare with a top repro vet. I’ve not been able to find anyone who has had success with it either.[/QUOTE]
I have two foals, a filly and colt, on the ground from Harley VDL. Both of my mares took the first time, guess I am the lucky one.
I was planning to breed to him again in the spring. My foals are fantastic… the best I have.
I have 3 Catoki’s that are full siblings and I am pleased with all of them. Here is a video of my weanling colt. I am keeping the girls and selling the colt.
Here are pics of the full sisters to the Catoki/Contender colt. Love all 3 of them. Forgot to add the Catoki frozen semen was very good.
Our 17 year old imported States Premium Holsteiner mare took with Catoki on the second breeding. In retrospect, the first attempt was likely a transitional cycle so really, she took with the first cycle. She has been an embryo donor for 4+ years, so pretty excited that she settled with the Catoki. The vet said his stuff was better than most fresh.
Blue Moon - your babies are gorgeous, congrats!
Thank you and best of luck with your Catoki. Catoki is very good in sport and the breeding shed. A truly versatile stallion. :0)
May I throw a wrench in the wheel?
Let’s not get over run by fresh vs frozen.
I will fully advocate for frozen despite some and few attempts. The most important thing to consider, is if those who sell that frozen are intent on getting your mare in foal and not just selling you the semen and running off.
I don’t discount or discredit any stallion based in whether they are offered as fresh or frozen. I want to know in each case, if it fails, will the stallion owner support my endeavor?
I’ve benefited from the positive and lost from the negative.
Cheers
