I have been following a mare named Special Jak since about 2010 when she was at Suffolk Downs. Now she is in Florida and is 7. She is definitely a hard knocker. I started following her because I was standing at the rail at SD when her groom was walking her to the paddock before her race. He literally stopped and told me to bet on her because she was going to win. I didn’t bet as I was there on a journalism assignment, didn’t believe him, and was too lazy to walk back to the windows. Needless to say she won.
Very recently, she was claimed by trainer Peter Walder. I got a notice from my virtual stable that she is going to run in the Iron Lady race at Gulfstream. This is the description of the race:
Purse: $ 110,000. For Fillies And Mares, Three Year Olds And Upward Which Have Started For A Claiming Price Of $7,500 Or Less Since January 1, 2012. With $110,000 Guaranteed, Of Which $60,500 To First, $22,000 To Second, $11,000 To Third, $5,500 To Fourth, And $1,100 To All other finishers. Three Year Olds, 121 lbs; Older, 124.
Very interesting. I am guessing that’s why he claimed her. I wish them both luck.
Anyhow, the reason I am posting this is that I am curious if anyone knows him. I would eventually like to offer a home to Special Jak when she is done running. Should I just call him? Do trainers welcome calls like this? Or do they think it is bs?
