I am looking for a 2-horse straight load bumper pull horse trailer with ramp. Loved my old one from the 1990s (a Merhow Verylite). Everyone I have contacted now has aluminum floors in their trailers. I am concerned re vibration, heat transfer, noise, etc. Are there any trailers made with wood floors today? Or am I mistaken about aluminum floors and the horse’s comfort? [Sorry for cross post in Off Course – my error.]
I pulled a 2H BP with aluminum floor for 13yrs.
Matted properly there is no loss of comfort for the horses.
I’ve owned seven trailers over the years, 6 with aluminum floors,1 with wood. Both my current trailers have aluminum floors.
I have hauled all over the East coast, sometimes 16 hours a day, and have never had any issues. My trailers all have good quality hats, and I always use shavings. My horses have traveled well this way.
As as far as maintenance, I clean out after every trip and power wash a couple times a year.
My previous trailer had wood flooring with mats over it. The trailer I have now has Rumber flooring. I went with the Rumber flooring because it doesn’t transfer heat like aluminum and there are no mats to drag out to clean like with wood. It comes with a 20 year warranty. As I get older, the less my back likes having to drag and clean stall and trailer mats.
I’m with you. I’d never put my horse in a trailer with an aluminum floor (corrosion anyone).
Equispirit has wood and Rumbar options. I would imagine that Hawk and Trailet do also
My TrailsWest I had a few years ago had wood floors. My CircleJ I have now also has wood. Though CircleJ got bought by someone? I never got the full story on that one… but if you were in the market for used and saw a circle J that fit your needs it would likely have wood floors.
Gore trailers have wooden floors with mats on top. I love my 2-horse bumper pull with dressing room. It was a big upgrade from the Brenderup Baron I had before.
EquiSpirit does in all their models.
I’ve had nothing aluminum for the past 17 years and am about to get my first trailer with WERM flooring, just to eliminate the pulling mats issue. I like aluminum fine. As long as you monitor and maintain them, they hold up amazingly well. Mine have always been well-matted so vibration hasn’t been a problem; and in a well ventilated trailer, heat has never been an issue either. I personally never want wood flooring.
Adam trailers have wood w/ mats onthe floors. Horses seem happy.
I had wood, then aluminum (went to a bigger trailer). I was fastidious about pulling mats and keeping the trailer clean, but in 6 years the pitting in the aluminum floor was terrifying. New trailer (smaller again) is a Rumber floor model and I LOVE it.
My mare gets bothered by too many shavings when she ships (sneezy/allergies), and with the Rumber I can ship with no shavings - the floors are grippy and cushioned, and then when I get home I clean, hose and the trailer is ready to go for the next time!
Hawk trailers have wood floors. I love mine, and so do the horses. My previous trailer had an aluminum floor and my horses seem much more comfortable in the Hawk.
My 2YO Trails West has wood.
Titan’s have wood floors.
I bought a new Trails West last year and it has wood floors.
After going from wood floors to aluminum I would definitely get wood floors given the chance. Moving the mats around after every use is extremely time consuming to clean the floor. Despite that our floor is still pitting and starting to get small holes.
Hawk has Rumbar available as well. Mine has it and I love it.
I love my Boeckman with Aluminum floor. No Maintance at all. The rubber is attached to the floor so not sure about any heat problems. Never had any. No mats are moving and I don’t need shavings…
i also have a Hawk with Rumber flooring and love it. I have had it 13 years and it has held up very well.
Whenever I get another trailer I will look for Rumber or equivalent.
My Boeckmann trailer has a completely sealed wooden floor, textured so it is a non slip surface. ( years old, no sign of wear.
