Wondering if it would be okay for my pony to wear one under her turnout blanket for the winter in which case it would be on almost 24/7. I tried emailing BOT about this with no response.
I have a cold backed horse who definitely was more comfortable when she had her BOT sheet as a liner under her turnout blanket in the winter. It was on 24/7 with no issues.
Yup, no problem. I use one as a blanket liner or sheet. Toasty pony with s happy back on “cold” Florida mornings
I think it would be fine, but I would work up to it being on that long. BOT recommends starting with having it on for 2-4 hours for the first several days and then gradually increasing from there.
Is it durable enough as a stand alone blanket? I was seriously thinking about getting the therapeutic fleece blanket for winter as it never gets below 50 degrees in winter where horse lives in So. Cal. He would wear it at night. I though about the mesh during the day. Is that too much? Horse is 21 and I want to keep him comfortable. I heard goods things about BOT products.
I use mine as a stable sheet. Got cold enough this weekend for them to have under turnout sheet and everyone felt great and super limber!
We use the mesh sheets as stable sheets. When one is on stall rest, they end up wearing it 24/7 and we’ve never had issues with that. The fit through the shoulders/neck is weird on literally every horse I’ve ever put it on. Because the inside lining isn’t slippery, they pull back and then get stuck there. For that reason, we take them off before turnout and put them back on when the horse comes in. They’re reasonably durable - although the no dryer rule makes them annoying to wash in the winter.
I have 1 fleece, and use it as a cooler. I wouldn’t expect any fleece to be durable enough to be used as stable sheet - although I think it would hold up as a liner under another blanket.
For the solid, thick-necked types, I prefer the fit of the Rambo Ionic line.
Thanks everyone!! Super helpful.
@joiedevie99 mine is solid and thick-necked haha I will definitely look into that
Yup, lots of people use the mesh sheets as stable sheets. (BTW @PonyPenny the term “mesh” is a bit confusing here. It’s a little less warm than the fleece, but not actually breezy like a scrim. For your situation/weather, the mesh sheet would be perfect for cool nights.) One thing to be aware of, besides perhaps being a good idea to build them up to it as another poster noted, is that they are stronger right out of the package than once they have been used a while. Just keep it in mind when blanketing on those “in between, can’t decide” nights, a new BOT will have a little extra oomph.
I personally throw mine under a turn out sheet. I know lots of people who use as stable sheets, if they have the luxury being able to swap sheets before T/O. However- I would never turn out in the mesh sheet alone. They are incredibly fragile. Back on Track does make a turn out blanket.
I tried it as a underlayer once- and got the worst static electricity build up ever! How do you all deal with that?
If you’re looking for a turnout option with the ceramic component in the fabric (rather than a second underlayer), check out Draper Therapy products. My horse’s heavyweight turnout is a Draper-- it is the best ever. Super well made and has held up great over the years.
Thank you. Your answer was very helpful.
