Does everything have to be a wrap collar?!

I like my wrap collar shirts. That said, I ALWAYS do them up completely when wearing one under a jacket. I think they look tidy when done up so long as they are well fitting.

I’m a fan of my TS Trophy Hunter low rise breeches too - they still come up to just below my belly button and are high enough in the back. I always wear a belt.

Annnnnnnd… not all ‘tech’ fabrics look like the Animo coats. My GP Techlite is NOT skin tight, and looks very similar to my GP wool coats from a distance but is MUCH cooler. End Rant

I don’t mind the wrap collar shirts, but I still prefer a traditional collar. IMO they look nicer up close (can’t tell the difference from a distance). Plus they’re all super cheap now

Like pull-on boots, they’ve been replaced by a more modern and often efficient way of fastening. I like the wrap collars–nothing to lose, easy to fasten, attractive. I miss my pull on field boots (and, no, I’m not paying $1200 for a pair of custom Vogel or Dehner boots!). No zippers to break on pull-ons…
You will have to pull my gorgeous, perfectly fitting pull on Grand Prix boots from my cold, dead hands. If they ever wear out, I’m going to have to get customs, just so I can get boots without zips; I’ve had one pair of zip boots for schooling and I hate the zip back on them.

I’ve taken advantage on some of the screaming deals on the nice ratcatcher shirts, because I’ve moved mostly to eventing and dressage, so the only time I’ve got an actual show shirt on, it’s got a stock tie (an ACTUAL stock tie, not one of those hideous bib things, either!) over it. Renders the closure moot anyway! The last time I did jumpers, last winter, it was nice to break out one of my lovely old check patterned ratcatchers under a sweater. I miss colors and patterns, too! Unless something tragic happens to my supply of show shirts, I plan on wearing them until they wear out. Considering I wear them each maybe twice a year, that’s going to be a while

I don’t mind the collar open and folded down IF there isn’t a jacket over it. But my feeling is that if one is wearing a jacket, one’s collar should be properly fastened. JMHO.
Oh. People do that with their jackets on? And they don’t bother to wear a tie? I mean, come on, that’s a legit thing that you can do, but if you’re going to appropriate menswear conventions, wear the damn tie or you look classless.

Like the new tech coats (Animo, etc)? OMG, when they make the very skinny tall teen look like a sausage, you know that the rest of the world should stay far, far away.
This problem is not the fault of the jackets. The people who look like sausages in these jackets are simply buying them in sizes that are too small. Just because the coats stretch doesn’t mean they are SUPPOSED to stretch when you are standing in front of the mirror at the tack store, buttoning them up while trying them on. The stretch should only come into play when you are moving, and even then, no one but the person wearing it should be able to tell that the jacket is stretching.

Are you saying I don’t look fabulous in this picture (which was totally serious, obviously!)? https://sphotos-b-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/1231191_607028458850_490835931_n.jpg

I have a wrap collar and a tech coat only because it’s so much lighter than my other coats. I don’t think I look like too much of a sausage ;-), but I can say that although wrap collars are handy, I’m not really a fan of them when I see them in pictures, at least on me. They don’t seem to attach right or look clean. Perhaps if someone could perfect a wrap collar that goes around to the side a bit more instead of just hanging out in front, I’d be more inclined to spend money on another one.

How do the snaps hold up?

To the people who wear wrap collars, how do you find that the snaps have held up over time? My local tack shop was having a sale this weekend and I checked out a few show shirts and considered a wrap collar shirt but turned it down because the snaps were falling off and the thread was clearly stretching and pulling away form the snap. It was a nice RJ Classics shirt, so I don’t think it was cheap, I think it’s just been yanked on and tried on lots and is falling apart. Anyone else noticed this?

Oh, you’re going to hate me… Cute picture… BUT I think the coat is too tight on your arms and too short. The body of it looks good. And I appreciate that it is a three button coat.

When you first started seeing wrap collars, they seemed to have a flap that went all the way to the back of your neck and snapped. But, since many people ride without the collar done up, that REALLY doesn’t work.

JenEm: I’ve been looking and looking for a lilac shirt with some sort of a pattern. It has taken me almost 6 years to find one I liked (I obviously wasn’t very intent on a purchase). It just came and is too big. Sigh. I will probably wear it anyway. I hate all the plain jane shirts out there right now.

I think my biggest problem with the wrap collars is that everything is WHITE. Bleh. I found some Essex Classics traditional collared shirts in nice checked patterns for 10 bucks locally.

If I were able to find a wrap collar in colors/patterns, I would never wear a traditional collar again!

I love my ratcatcher white shirt. Old, boring but classic. This year I bought a wrap collar when I left my shirt (but had the ratcatcher) in Indy for Devon… and I liked it…[hangs head in shame]… The old choker style will always be my “go to” but now I have a back up…

Everyone thinks the wrap collars are a new idea , there not… childrens shirts had been made with velcro wrap collars for years ( Since the invention of velcro I think) specifically to fill a need for moms whose kids constantly lost the collars … Once you were a responsible individual you got to graduate to a real collar … Someone needs to foward this thread to RJ and Essex and TS , Oh BTW … Custom RIding apparel still makes regular rise Breeches , They are beautiful maintain there shape and last FOR EVER !!!

^All of my shirts are childrens’, and while they are not wrap collars, they do have velcro chokers. I dream of a day where I can wear a big kid shirt with buttons for the choker…

Then again, I just bought pants for my upcoming journey to Madagascar (ahhh!!!) and they are all boys’ mediums, recommended for kids aged 8-10. I’m 22.

Put that dream aside. Buttons are a PITA. That’s one thing I like about wrap collars, no stupid buttons.

ComingBack, I’ve bought a couple of colored Royal Highness wrap-collar Coolmax shirts from Victory Canter. The patterns (one herringbone, one rattan) are subtle and the colors (one blue, one pink) aren’t garish, and they’re really affordable to boot. They passed muster with my George Morris-trained trainer, who’s a stickler for turnout, so I’m assuming they’re fine.

Has anyone tried on/purchased this RJ Classics softshell coat? I like the look and the price but want to be sure it’s not too short/tight before I sell my wool coats. (I sweat like crazy, so a washable coat would make things much easier.)

Well the link takes me to “Sleeping Man Cuddles with Fox After Mistaking It For His Girlfriend”… But, I have a RJ soft-shell and I adore it! I had to order a size up, but it is beautifully constructed, and it is super traditional! I upgraded from the essential coat, and the soft-shell did not have any less structure than the regular material! I highly recommend it!

I actually had one of their shirts in white but it just did not fit me well. The sleeves were way too long, and I prefer the extra buttons on the sleeves so I can adjust the way the wrist fits.

Me too…made me chuckle

I don’t mind the way wrap collars look…on other people. Usually. But I guess I don’t have the right neck for one cause on me it just looked frumpy.

You took the words out of my mouth. DD has two of these shirts and they’re lovely. They wash up great and look very nice. She loves that she can open the collar (OUTSIDE OF THE RING) and it’s got a pretty print inside.

ETA - they also don’t run super skinny/straight, which is great for the non-stick-figure girls.

Super shorty , you sound like you could double as a Jockey???

I have a pretty long, scrawny neck and can’t wear the wrap collar. When I put my jacket on, all this fabric poofs out and I look like I’m wearing an ascot or a bib.

I’m glad I have a great supply of colored shirts because you can’t find them anymore, especially with a choker. I’m tired of this “everything white” shirt trend with a navy coat. Everyone looks like a waiter at a fancy restaurant.
