Okay folks, here is a tall order: 17 inch, some roughout on the seat, fairly high pommel and cantle, semi QH bars…and of course good looking and not as heavy as sin. Decent quality too. And not ungodly expensive! (I can hear all of you laughing right now!!)
I can’t see it being anything but a custom job, but I thought I’d but it out to the vast COTH bank of knowledge and see if anybody had any suggestions! In essence a saddle with both barrel racing and trail/pleasure features
Thanks!
D.
The larger the saddle, the more material, it is going to be somewhat heavier than a smaller saddle, by necessity.
You can lighten a saddle by making it Mother Hubbard, only one piece on the back.
Tooling will require a better, thicker leather, rough out you can get by with somewhat lighter leather.
Butterfly skirts and in skirt rigging also cut down on leather there.
Barrel racing saddles tend to be some of the lighter saddles, but if you are trail riding, that tall horn may get in your way, look for one with as short as you can find.
Some cutting and reining saddles tend to be made lighter than roping saddles and come in those larger sizes.
For what you seem to want, I would keep looking on those tack selling websites and see if something close by comes up you can try.
What do you consider to be ungodly expensive and how heavy can you go?
I’ve been pretty happy with my saddle. It was built by RW Bowman, I ordered it through Southern Trails Saddles and I think I paid around $1700 give or take? I think it weighs around 30lbs, not light by any means, but not too heavy to throw up on my 15h horse
