Does your dog howl?

My mini schnauzer never howled at sirens or anything else. The huge GSD (a real police K-9, he was so adorable) behind me howled at all sirens (I think he recognized others were going on calls, and he was home). One day I heard a siren going close by, and Sammy, the GSD was howling, then I realized there was a strange, faint sound coming from my back yard. Yes, my wannabe wolf had tried to join in, however he apparently had very little clue in how to really howl. It’s the only time I heard him do that, but it was a hysterically poor attempt.

Mine don’t, but they sure bark when they hear the coyotes out there.

Rusty howls at sirens. Snicker tries to but he is “howl challenged”. He sounds like you would expect a dog being hit with a shovel, to sound…blood curdling screeches.
Panda hasn’t howled yet…she just sits there looking at rusty and then snickers kind of befuddled.

Oh man, my beloved heart-dog was a blue-tick coonhound, and she didn’t just bay or howl, or or or…she was NEVER quiet. lol But, I could get her baying and wow was it fun!

I have tried to get my current dogs to howl, and only one is able - the goldendoodle. My golden retriever cannot howl, not at all. What she does, when I get my doodle all riled up, is more of a coyote “yip yip yip” noise.

I have weird dogs. lol

My Labrador Retriever doesn’t howl but will bark/growl.

My corgi mix only howls when Taylor Swift is on the radio.

Or Law & Order opening sequence is playing.

Neither of mine do. My big dog only barks, and only barks if she really means it. The little one barks a lot, but no howling.

Weirdly, my old dog never howled until her last few months on earth, and then she’d only do it in her sleep, and ALWAYS in the middle of the night. Scared the crap out of me every time, and I think it startled her, too!

We have a malamute x and a husky x and both howl, particularly at the sirens. It doesn’t bother us - we let them carry on as long as they want.

My Pyr howls whenever an emergency siren is audible. I had to bring her into the city a few months ago to see a vet…I think she strained her vcCal cords. My one year old thought singing was a great idea and joined in. I had three coffees and then we all had to have a nap when we got home.

I’ve never heard the Pyr x BC howl, and our Bichon/Shih Tzu didn’t howl in the 18 years we had her. Both

My little longhair chi howls like she is being skinned alive when the JRT begins her neurotic barking when I get home in the evening. She never used to do that; the JRT’s barking is the culprit. Anyway, maybe because she is so small it is very high pitched and the first time I heard her do it I rushed in bc I thought she was actually hurt (like hung up on the baby gate or something). Nope. Just howling!

Funny, someone mentioned their dogs barking at the coyote howls? Mine listen intently, but are dead silent, even the JRT, who has a voice about everything. Maybe they are smart enough to know they’d be dinner in a heartbeat in that showdown!

I’ve had a lot of Malamutes and they howl. And roo. And chuff. And grumble. Chatter. Argue like crazy.
But not really bark.
A lot of times people hear that they’re not big on barking and assume they’re quiet, lol! So not true.
And if one gets going the rest join in. And we live in hearing distance of a fire station…made things interesting. They also liked to reply to the coyotes.
My GSD only howled a few times, mostly due to sirens. If the coyotes had a party, he’d just keep tilting his head. Which is ridiculously adorable.
Past Spoos were howlers too.
My niece lives about a mile away and she has 2 coonhounds. They’re adorable but holy crap are they loud! “Roh! Roh! Roh!” Really good looking dogs and their voices are spectacular. But they do tend to sound off over anything and everything. Don’t know how she deals with that while having a newborn and toddler in the house, those kids should be pretty bomb proof, lol!

When my sister was a toddler and would have a crying tantrum outside, the spaniel next door would howl along with her. So endearing to me. I’m sure it was less cool for the adults.

VERY common sound in my household, multiple times a day. I should film when I walk into the house after work. SOOoooo much howling.

Keeper and bf will howl back and forth to each other. Keep doesn’t respond to my howl :frowning: but has entire conversations with bf.

That would make me smile. Even in the throes of one of my almost-three-year old’s finest moments.

My brothers husky is a big time talker howler. You can set her off by calling other dogs lol.

She taught my lab to howl with her. She had him howling/baying at about 12 weeks old.

So Jealous!!! My mini does not howl. He comes from a line that is a bit infamous for howling. I’ve watched umpteen videos of his relatives howling away on Facebook. I’ve even been at his breeders for grooming work and the entire kennel has cut up while my little man stood there staring blankly at everyone. I am holding out one day that he will surprise me.

I have Rotties. One of my previous dogs would “Wooo-woooooo!” when she saw her favorite people. Not a howl, a woo-woooo. I loved that about her, and haven’t heard another do that since.

Current dog has the knack of howling in her sleep, startling herself and the rest of us. All DH has to do is whisper her name and she has a little grunt and goes back to sleep. But dang, she is LOUD!

Some Rotts will grumble or grrrr why they are really happy. This one is big on the happy grumbles. We talk back and forth. Someone who does not know the breed might think it was scary!

Previous dogs have all snored MUCH worse than the humans in the household.

I have one that howls for her dinner every day. First, she’ll come look at me expectantly, then get silly, then finally howl like there’s no tomorrow. She will howl if I say “speak” as well. My second dog will sometimes try to join in on the fun but the best she can do is whine. My howler is a 1/2 golden retriever mutt (I don’t know what the other half is).

My dogs howl a lot. I can often hear them when I’ve just left the house and they’re crated. But border terriers, are notorious singers, so they set each other off on a regular basis - it’s usually when they’re feeling mournful about something. They always pull my Doberman in, too, and he has the loudest and worst voice!!

Grace-My boy’s howl was the most pathetic, weak howl you can imagine. He wanted to copy the big GSD, but just didn’t know how. It’s the only time I ever heard him do that, and the GSD moved soon, so he didn’t have anyone to copy.
