Only at sirens as they go past. I know immediately a ambulance or something will be coming when they start howling. Both always start before I can even hear the siren for another minute or so
Do my dogs howl? I have beagles, 'nough said.
I have a beagle. He bays when we’re out hiking or at the dog park, or when another dog is misbehaving in Petsmart. He has a bark but I don’t hear it often.
He’s only howled twice, both times during M83’s Outro. Specifically the part where he says “creatures of my dreams raise up and dance with me.” For some reason that gets a little howl out of him. During the rest of the song he will just sit and look intently at the speakers with his ears up and his head cocked. He ignores all other music so far.
Around the house he doesn’t make any noise, though he will growl a little and come get me if he thinks he sees something suspicious.
I have 3 of my 6 will howl to the coyotes and sirens. One is a lab/hound mix, one is lab/terrier mix, one is manchester terrier X. My big dog howls when our Manchester terrier X barks. My 2 foster dogs don’t react to the coyotes at all.
At one time, I had 7 dogs—5 Dobermans, a Sheltie, and a Peekapoo.
I live in the city, VERY residential, and ever so often my “pack” (sans the Sheltie) would sit on the back porch and do their imitation of wolves.
I always wondered what neighbors thought of hearing ‘howling’ in the city, those 5 deep voices and the 1 soprano wolf.
I have two Alaskan Malamutes that love to howl. The Great Pyrenees joins right in either, enthusiastically. He doesn’t have the beautiful tone of the Mals though.
Astrid, a Finnish Lapphund, stands on her hind legs and howls when the fire engine goes by.
Oh yes it does, my pet dog Tommy, keeps howling a lot, and many times the neighbors have complained , such a mess at times.
I have Alaskan Malamutes and they all howl!
When I had the girls (Aussie mix and Cocker), they and the JRT boy would howl if I went on a walk without them. Or sometimes they would have a singalong on the back porch even if I was home (never knew what set them off). I could tell each of their voices apart, even at a distance. Once, I went walking with a friend in the subdivision next door (maybe 1/4-1/2 mile away), and could still hear my dogs singing at home!
I lost the girls last summer and haven’t heard the JRT howl anymore (he rarely barks either), but now have a Catahoula/beagle cross, so there is plenty of baying from him, especially if there is a turtle anywhere out of the pond! I guess he’s letting me know there is an evil killer turtle coming to get me, even if it’s on the other side of the fence, which really drives him crazy.
