Dog attack at Saugerties

Goddamn, don’t you get tired of people who just won’t obey any rule not enforced with a 2"x4"?

Bad behavior on the part of trainers at horse shows goes as back as far as I have been showing, well back into yestercentury. The same people who would lunge a horse to death to make it quiet thought it was hysterical to buy bad-boy dogs and let them run wild. If their Jack Russell (usually) got into a loud wrestling match with another random dog in the barn aisle, so much the better!

On the other side: Who was the Horse Show Sheriff who ran the Doggie Jail? You had to come pay the penalty to bail your loose and delinquent dog out? I’ll tell you what: Those owners earned those consequences.

Is this the Lynn Reed? Lynn M. Reed?

If I’ve got the wrong one, please let me know!

Otherwise, let 'r ride: If Ms. Reed has gone to horse shows and allowed her dogs to kill another before, I’m going to assume that she is down with everyone knowing that. After all, she could have done otherwise after that first awful event, right?

Years ago, there was a boarder t the farm lived and worked at who had a particularly obnoxious dog, which she would bring to the barn and let run loose.
One day, the dog ran into the indoor and started after the green horse my friend and trainer was riding, and it was not pretty.
The trainer informed the boarder that she was not to bring the dog henceforth. (Farm owner had allowed it.)
Boarder replied that if she couldn’t bring her dog she would take her business elsewhere.
Trainer asked politely if she needed help moving her large trunk.

No, you are correct. One and the same. She appears to be governed by no rules that regular Joe Public has to abide by.

Another reason I like cats.

That was my first thought as well, except the dogs that attacked and killed Diana Whipple in the hallway of her apartment building in San Francisco were Presa Canarios. Not sure if this breed is related to the dog in question here. It was a horrible case. The story behind the owners/handlers of the dogs was rather bizarre and the case was in the news for a long time.

It’s a people issue. I have known and interacted with numerous Cane Corso dogs over the years in various situations and all but one have been a delight. The one wasn’t terrible, he just couldn’t be trusted in public and had to be on a leash. No surprise as he had crap owners the first few years of his life before landing in a shelter. I’ve actually considered owning one myself as they’ve really grown on me. I also recall one that was a barn dog (trainer owned) and was a complete obedient love bug. So please, don’t bash the breed. Any dog/breed can be ruined.

I am a big advocate for no dogs. I’d like to say dogs allowed only on leash, but people don’t follow these rules. So it needs to be no dogs. Full stop.

As for how someone’s dog can literally kill another dog at a venue and be allowed to return or allowed to attend other recognized competitions is a mystery to me. I get it, show grounds and organizers want their money, but damn. On the other hand, you could end up losing people once they realize its a free for all on your grounds/within your organization and that you just don’t care.

So nice to hear that somone was able to give the child another puppy. You cannot replace a beloved pet, but at least it will provide the child with something positive to focus on.

That’s utterly terrible.

The Presa Canarios and Cane Corso dogs are both Mastiffs. I do believe that some dogs are more forgiving and “beginner friendly” than others. A dog with protective traits isn’t neccessarily a bad thing, unless they are mismanaged.

Question - if all the shows in the area got together to ban problem dogs (at the show organizer’s discretion), what is Lynn Reed going to do? Sell her farm and move? Stop showing?

As someone who shows solo and brings my dog as my buddy, people not wanting any dogs at shows is a bummer. My pup is a good girl, she stays in the trailer if I can’t be with her (ramp down, she’s tied to a D-ring on the wall so she has shade). I camp in my trailer, and she snuggles with me at night. We play fetch in the early morning, if I can find someplace that won’t bother anyone (we are talking WAY out, back behind the pastures, type places). She has a proofed recall, and is just a delight. If she was banned, I’d be sitting in my trailer alone.

Why do you need to bring your dog? Honestly, dogs at a horse show and persons desire to bring the dog is a personal problem.

Agree… I’ve been in the horse show game for over two decades… love dogs, have had dogs… never, ever, thought they belonged at a horse show. YMMV.

To me it’s as asinine as bringing a cat to a dog show, or a rat to a cat show… don’t know why it seems outrageous to do that, but perfectly acceptable to bring a dog to a horse show…

Honestly there is a simple solution - Actually enforce the leash rules at the show. Its not a dog issue its a people issue(Crap owners and show runners not sticking to the rules). Every show bill has a leash rule written into it but show-runners are to afraid to actually enforce it for fear of pissing off a BNT. BNT trainers are above the rules because people have let them get away with BS for to long.

if the dog(s) in question have a history of attacking other dogs and people at shows how are the dogs still permitted on the property and how are the dogs not euth candidates. I am sorry but why have the authorities not been involved yet? this is disgusting. I am fine with dogs being at shows as long as they are on a short leash, under control, or in a stall where they cannot harm someone. These dogs should never be on a lunge line for a leash.

Because I’m a one man band. If I don’t bring her, there is no one to take care of her. I typically camp at the shows I go to, so I’m away for at least two full days and a night.

I am a one man band too. I hire dog care for 2-4 week blocks of time because I can’t bring my dog. Me having a dog is my personal problem. I fix it.

This is what I think, too. What makes it so hard to tell someone to restrain their dogs, or to tie them up safely? Why is this so offensive to people?

My dog very rarely even comes in the barns with me at shows. I have a bike that I ride to and from the barns on, and she stays in the trailer. People sprawl their stuff all over hell’s half acres in the aisles at horse shows, it’s not safe for the HORSES to get through, let alone a dog. The only time she comes with is for my final night check, and that’s just so she can go potty too and I can go to bed.

But is the dog the problem, or is it the person handling the dog? Don’t fix the wrong problem.

What kind of care do you hire? Do you stay at a show for 4 weeks at a time, or am I reading your statement incorrectly?

Well for enforcing leash laws people do put their dogs on very long leashes so that doesn’t fix anything.

I travel for work. Anywhere from 2-4 weeks every other month. Soon I’ll be gone 6-9 months. I do in home care for the short ones, and my dog lives with my dog sitter for the deployments.

Horse shows are handled the same as the short work trips.

Yeah, actually. If these dogs are a danger and have a history of attacks, then I figured they’d be a candidate for euth. Especially deadly attacks. I would think one could file a formal report on behalf of their child with the proper authorities. That atleast creates a record of sorts.

Then say dogs need to be on 6 or 4 foot leashes. It’s an easy rule change, and that would be easy to go/no-go with a simple tape measure.

I traveled full time for 4 years, and gave away my dog to a family friend at that time. My heart breaks for you, honestly. It’s not easy to be away from the furry family.

I, frankly, could not afford that much dog sitting cost, on top of board on my two horses.

Hey, while we’re banning dogs, can we ban small children too? It’s a horse show not a playground, and I see as many if not more mismanaged screaming toddlers running around than loose dogs. grin
