Thanks all. I did not know I could just swap a PetSafe box for my Invisible Fence box. I’ve installed a fence at a prior house and can comfortably bury new wire. It’s just A LOT of wire and I’d prefer to find the break if I can. That’s where my Invisible Fence experience has gone so badly.
There is a gadget that they sell on the website to help find the break. Sometimes you can’t find it. It could be something as simple as a crack in the coating and not an actual break.
You can also take a length of wire and check your fence in sections by splicing that in before you start ripping it out
Here’s the gadget for Invisible Fence: Buy a really cheap little transistor radio, battery operated. Duct tape it to an old broom handle. Turn it on, turn up the volume and tune it as low as it can go on the AM dial. Walk up to your dog wire as close as you can be to the transmitter and you should get a low hum on the radio. Now follow you fence until the signal disappears. That’s where the break is. (I find I have to sweep the radio side to side because I don’t always know exactly where the buried fence is.)
Or you can go on Amazon and buy a thing that basically does the same thing but includes a tone generator that you attach to one end of the wire at the transmitter.
Ah, ok I didn’t realize you had a break. That sucks.
I’ve found that once the wire is broken it can be really hard to get it to work properly again. It depends of course; we had a utility guy shovel through the wire and that was an easy repair as it was a clean break. But if it’s pulled and broken or degraded from age then you really have to replace the whole thing. We also had the guy who picked up manure dig into into the wrong spot with the kubota (like 20 feet from the manure pile ) and he caught the wire and pulled it back. It was not possible to fix it. We had to replace a 200ft section.
Thank you all. Much more helpful than 6 weeks of messing around with Invisible Fence. I suspect a cracked coating is likely as the wire has been in the ground 10+ years and the outage is intermittent. Next time it fritzs I’ll try the radio option and can hopefully just pull out that section. And if I can’t figure it out hopefully the PetSafe franchise is still local.
Yeah if it’s that old I would just replace the wire. If you have a real fence just secure it to that. Ours is woven through the no climb. Just don’t pull it hard while you’re doing it, if you stretch the wire but will go kaput.
