I have an acre property that is fenced but my escape artist dog is finding ways to get out! Has anyone used the Halo collars or any other wired or wireless system? The Halo collar looks good but pricey and my dogs play rough so I wonder if it would get busted. Thanks in advance!
We put a hotwire top and bottom of the fence. sneaky athletic fuzzy malinois were finally contained.
I am a big fan of hot wire for horses! That would be hard to do at the gate though……
not at all. you just ned tp be diligent, opening and closing the wire.
Just as if you only had the hotwire and no actual gate.
also, wire mesh helps.
But I do second the idea of the hotwire. hd that for my SKPs back in the day. Worked like a charm.
My gate is automatic and I am really spoiled with not having to get out to open it!!! But sometimes it doesn’t close tightly enough and I suspect my escape artist is pushing out thru there…sometimes
Following. We bought a place with 5 acres in Invisible Fence. I know lots of folks abhor these fences but my dogs respect it. The service is HORRIBLE and it’s intermittently fritzy after 3 years of being fine. I’m so irritated I’d like an alternative. Switching vendors for 5 acres is going to be spendy anyhow. I have a Tractive for off leash forays and it is very cool technology. I think Halo is similar premise.
there is a lot to be said about conditioning as well: they get zapped (hard) a few times they respect the boundary, at least for a while.
Oh, you just reminded me that I’m going to have an issue on my parent’s property. For our first Pointer we had the invisible fence for their 12 acres. It worked great, she only wore the collar for a week and we never bothered with it again and she never left the property. She then taught my dog the boundaries as a puppy. For some reason my dad didn’t do the fence training with Pointer #2 but my dog taught her the boundaries which the Pointer considers mere suggestions but she does know them. Unfortunately I can’t count on Pointer #2 to teach our new puppy the boundaries and I doubt the invisible fence is functional after 15+ yrs. This could be a problem.
For my crazy hound we use a physical barrier plus hot wire. He will blow through an invisible fence all day long. He hyper focuses on scents.
We have about an acre fenced with 4 foot high “turkey wire” mesh (2x3" squares). Took my latest set of terriers about 2 weeks to figure out how to get out, and they kept doing it. UNTIL! We ran PetSafe wire around the perimeter hanging it on the fence except at gates. At the gates, we ran the wire through old garden hose and buried it. This makes it pretty easy to find a break should one occur.
Note that we went with PetSafe because the collars are charged with 9 v batteries. With less of a kick than that, the terriers would grit their teeth and go on through. So it kind of depends on your dog.
Doing the installation ourselves, I think it cost about $350 for the wire, charger and collar. Second collar was probably more. Being able to relax while the dogs are out: priceless.
Thanks, I will check that out!
I have one dog that can jump a 4’ fence from a stand still so we ended up trying a wireless system similar to the Halo collar. The GPS signal was wonky though, and the boundary would often shift, confusing the dogs.
We ended up having an invisible fence put in instead. They broke through a couple of times at first but have learned to respect it now and have had no issues since.
For dogs that will either climb over, or dig under a physical barrier, I think the invisible fences are the way to go.
That being said, we’re on 15 acres so even if one goes through it, they don’t really leave the property (only 2 acres are fenced for the dogs) but I may be less trusting of the system if we were on a busy road or something and would at least want a system that alerted me if a dog breeched the boundary.
You can run a coated wire underground at the gate, and then reconnect on the other side to continue the hot wire. Pretty common installation in pasture fencing.
This is a random internet image showing how it is done.
All the LGD folk recommend Sport Dog fencing, you can attach it right to the existing fence rather than burying it.
Interesting-I thought it had to be buried, which would be a heckuva project! Going to look into this
We have our invisible fence wire just run through the no climb and buried in conduit under the gates. Works great
I have a pet safe fence. The wire they all use is the same, it’s not special in any way. Just metal wire in a plastic sheathing. Just disconnect the invisible fence and connect your new box right into it.
My dogs respect our pet safe fence really well. Just make sure you check the batteries in the collars regularly as when they fail some dogs are smart enough to know and will take the chance to escape.
my neighbor has invisible fence and collar for their dog, works fine for their dog but the attacking running loose dogs do not have such a collar nor respect the invisible fence system
We are double fenced, makes a pain in the butt to mow between but we have never had our dogs attack (yet) by others since they can only get withing six feet of each other
The coyotes respect no fence, can easily clear a six foot fence…but the spacing of our double fencing makes it nearly impossible for them to clear the fence
It’s 18 gauge copper wire in plastic. So as long as you get that you’re good. But I’m not sure what all that was about a “vendor”.
It’s probably time for at least some of the wire to be replaced, so just get more wire and do it.
You can just go buy the wire in bulk or you can buy it in rolls labeled “invisible fence”.
You can also go to www.Petsafe.com and order it
Yeah, I meant that it’s not proprietary or anything between the companies
