Dog diarrhea that won't go away

My dog is an 8ish (estimated age) german shepherd mix. I adopted her last year. About 2 months ago she suddenly got diarrhea. 2 fecals and vet checks later they found she had hookworms despite being on hartgard plus religiously.

So she was treated for that last month. But she still has diarrhea. The vet keeps prescribing her metranidozol and she’ll be on it for a week but then a few days after she is off it she gets the diarrhea back. She’s getting the low fat sensitive stomach food and 1meal/day of lean cooked meat(chicken or hamburger) with white rice.

I’m so frustrated and discouraged that this will ever clear up. Thanks for listening.

Have you rechecked a fecal? It might be time for a second opinion if your vet isn’t exploring other reasons for the chronic diarrhea.

I was planning to bring in another sample this Monday. I meant to have done it last week.

It’s pricey, but there’s a diarrhea PCR panel we can send out to try to get to the bottom of recurrent diarrhea when first line treatment fails

Hookworms can be really tough to treat. And they get in the environment so she might be getting reinfected.

My elderly adopted dog had diarrhea once a week every week for two years. My new vet fecal tested and found nothing, like before, but didn’t disregard whipworms. He gave her a Metro. treatment and two Interceptor pills. She hasn’t had a problem since. She was getting regular Heartgard which doesn’t treat whipworms, but I think the Plus does?..if so, this post isn’t much help. But good luck!

Food allergy…does your food contain any milk or whey products ?? Cheese ??
Ask about a probiotic too please.

Seems like very little diagnostics have been run. So there’s still hope.

Ultrasound or endoscopy might be next up if food and medication trials are proving unhelpful.

We’ve had good results with using Forti Flora for 2 weeks.

Thanks for the responses. I spoke again with my vet. When I bring in the next sample they will include a broader panel of tests. But she feels that the hookworms can cause a lot of inflammation that might take months to resolve. Crossing fingers .

They can also be notoriously drug resist ant
