Dog eating latex? Posting for a friend

Today we had the vet out to the barn to do fall shots and things.

BO has a now 6 month old australian shepherd/ husky dog. EVERYTHING goes into this very active dog’s mouth.

It seems that he stole a bag of gloves in plastic from the vet. No one saw. The assistant noted that he chewed and likely ate much of the gloves and much of the plastic bag. She and the vet warned the owners to watch carefully for GI obstruction in the next day or two.

Does anyone have experience with a dog eating latex and plastic? How did it go? Again, asking for a friend.

BTDT with my beagle mix. He ate something worse though. It’s a pretty big deal if they get an obstruction and my vet considers it an emergency. If caught early you can avoid surgery.

Make sure dog is having normal stools, eating, not lethargic or throwing up. I would personally take dog in for an ultrasound if he hasn’t passed the items by tomorrow AM just to see where they are.

Dog is probably going to need antibiotics and some GI supplement to sooth his digestive track if he passes on his own and worst case is surgery.

Thanks!!! I forwarded your advice to the owners. Our vet and assistant said he could need surgery and has to be monitored closely. I mentioned that tomorrow is the day he’d pass things and recommended he only go out on a leash to check the stool and regularity of peeing and pooping.

Thanks again!

Dogs love spackle/drywall putty. I did not know this until we had a painter in last year and Zoe kept stealing his putty and eating it. I was frantically Googling to make sure it wasn’t toxic (it’s not) and learned that most dogs find it magically delicious.

This is so interesting to learn! I thought it was just my dog and assumed she was a PICA dog. She would literally eat the drywall.

Our sheperd loved rubber gloves in her young days (the colored ones you use for washing dishes and cleaning the house). We watched her but luckily she had no problems, she only passed very fancy colored stools after a couple of days

I have a dog that eats pieces of the pee pads that I have down for my cat with spinal damage. He poops out shreds of the blue waterproof backing daily with no ill effects

OTOH I had a dog that obstructed from eating the gauze pad that was on her leg after a blood draw! (In her crate on the way home from the vet)

Had another that got ahold of a sports bra, One of the elastic straps was missing. I called the vet and was told to use hydrogen peroxide to get him to vomit. There it was!

So far so good with Cosmo. I’ll have to ask about the blue-colored items in the poop!

UPDATE! Dog seems fine. I rescued a juvenile mouse from his mouth the other day. Trainer will kill me but… Dog is as energetic as ever and still, everything goes in his mouth.

Thank you for the advice, all!!!
