Dog food with NO chicken and NO grain?

I am at a loss to find dog food without chicken fat as an additive. Grain free isn’t hard to find, but they all seem to have chicken fat as the 4th or 5th ingredient. My little rescued mutt is allergic to grain and chicken/poultry. He has grown back a lot of his hair, but it’s been slow going because I have to keep looking for better dry food for him. He should be on puppy food (18 months old) but I had to stop feeding it because it had so much chicken fat, he started loosing hair again.

Buying hamburger is out of the question, I would go broke feeding hamburger to three dogs. Feeding one dog goodies and not the other two would create a bigger problem.

Does anyone know of a brand with NO chicken by-products?

My friend has a dog with the same allergies and she feeds MedCal (not sure if I have that spelling right) kangaroo formula. There are a few other brands out there that offer something similar - they were just not available in our area.

Acana had several varities, probably orijin too. On the cheaper end of the scale whole earth farms make a poultry and grain free food.

Fromm

  • Lamb and Lentil
  • Beef Frittata Veg
    Lotus
  • Grain-free Fish Recipe
    Orijen
  • Six Fish
  • Tundra
  • Regional Red
    Acana
  • Pacifica
  • Ranchlands
  • Grasslands
  • OR the limited ingredient formulas (Duck and Bartlett Pear, Lamb and Okanagan Apple, Pork and Butternut Squash)
    Horizon - Pulsar
  • Fish formula

None of this is meant to be an exhaustive list and please double-check me. These are just some of the formulas that my own local independent store carries.

Heyyyy, my kitten has the same allergies (we think.) Natural Balance limited ingredient is what we feed. Not the best quality food ever but definitely one of the safest for her to eat.

Taste of the Wild has several grain-free alternative protein source foods. Salmon, Bison, lamb, I think even wild boar.

My boston terrier requires the EXACT same diet. He can’t have egg/egg product either. Or anything feather related, actually. He also has a sensitivity to too much potato…it gives him flaky skin. However, some of his foods that I rotate do have potato, for money saving purposes  I rotate between…

Acana Pacifica-I like the ingredients on this, but he only likes it.
Nature’s Variety Rabbit or Salmon-the rabbit IS outsourced from China…so if that bothers you…he does EXCELLENT on the Salmon and loves it too.
Organix Salmon grain and poultry free-Gets a little fluffy on this one…he loves it.
Earthborn Holistic Meadow Feast (lamb based) or the bison version. Actually currently he is on this right now. He gets a little fluffy on this, only LIKES it and is flakier than normal. However, it’s very affordable. Right there with Taste of the Wild. But, it’s not a Diamond food like TOTH, with is a HUGE + in my book.
Natural Balance Duck and Potato They have a couple other grain and poultry-free varieties, but this one is my guy’s ABSOLUTE favorite food ever. It’s unfortunately very potato heavy and does make him flakier than I like. Also VERY affordable.

If money is not an option, I would HANDS down recommend a rotated diet of Nature’s Variety Salmon and Nature’s Variety Rabbit. I am a NERD when it comes to dog and feline nutrition and I really don’t think you will find a better quality product out there. They do not use ANY potato, either. He always loses fat and gains muscle on this food and has a sparkle in his eye. Even though he is small, he is ACTIVE and I was spending upwards of $60 per month feeding him the stuff. He weighs 25# for reference. I buy it sometimes, but only when it’s on sale.

Good luck! Food sensitivities can be a pain, but there are really a LOT of choices. If you are on a budget, I would go for the Earthborn Holistic or the Natural Balance. Around here, both go for about $50/28#.

Forgot I have also tried…

Wellness OceanWe both like this one. His coat GLEAMS on this stuff. I like to buy it when it’s on sale.
Merrick Texas Beef and Sweet Potato He liked it and looked good on it, but I have mixed feelings about the Merrick company in general. Overall, though, I think they put out a decent product.

I’m pretty sure that covers the majority of the ones I have tried…if I can think of anymore, I’ll post 'em!

Holistic Select, Anchovy Sardine and salmon

I have a GSD that has a super sensitive stomach/IBD so we stick to fish and have had great success (so far) on the Wellness Simple Adult dog food Salmon and Potato formula. There is no chicken or chicken fat in it and all grain free. I definitely recommend!

Natural balance limited ingredients diets for sure. They are great.

Some good suggestions in this thread.

Depending on if it’s available where you are, Open Farm might be something to try. They have a Pork recipe and a Whitefish recipe that could work for your dog. They’re a relatively new company and all the meats they use are Certified Humane.

Go! Venison could be a good option too.

Also as an aside, some dog foods that do use chicken fat have it rendered so that it is free of chicken protein, so it shouldn’t be a cause for reaction in your dog (FirstMate is one I can think of off the top of my head).

My Newfoundland/Bearded Collie mix has the exact same allergy. We feed him Nature’s Domain Salmon and Sweet Potato. Excellent quality and very affordable. The only downside is that you can only get it at Costco, so not a good solution if you don’t have or want a membership.

I feed Wellness Simple Salmon and Potato dry and canned to my sensitive boy. Petsmart carries it, as does wag.com … so it’s not too hard to find.

^Like that one, too.

Natural Balance Limited Ingredient is a pretty economical option. It is nice if you are wondering if there are any other protein allergies outside of chicken.

My puppy is thriving on Stella and Chewy’s. I feed both the freeze dried and frozen patties. The only formula with chicken in it is the chicken one! The beef, duck & turkey, venison, rabbit, surf & turf, and pheasant would all work.

I switched my dogs from Instinct to Acana Grasslands several months ago. It is fantastic feed. You should look at their website.

I feed Nature’s Variety Lamb Limited Ingredient (has peas). its the only thing my sensitive stomach dog can bear to eat.

Here’s a third vote for the Wellness Simple Salmon and Potato. We have a sensitive Manchester Terrier and this is the only food that we have really been happy with since we started (we have tried Natural Balance, RC Ver formula, Califirnia Natural, Evo and others…). Coat gleams and he absolutely loves it.

If your guy is smaller, I would try to find the small breed formula. Higher protein and fat, and a much more manageable kibble. I haven’t been able to find it in store locally, but have a neighborhood pet store order it for me or purchase online (from Chewy).

Good luck!
