Dog found 1 bug in food now doesn't want to eat

I have a Jack Russell / miniature Schnauzer mix that found one little bug, pretty sure it was a weevil, crawling in her bowl a few days ago now she is barely wanting to eat. She’s pretty sensitive in general so I’m kind of not surprised. As far as I’ve read weevils are harmless and I haven’t seen any more and I checked the food. We have a new bag of food coming although part of me think she’s being a bit finicky. And now I’m just picking up the bowl and continuing to offer it to her. She eats a bit but not a full meal.

I think we will just switch to new bag potentially when it gets here in case the bug ruined the food or something.

Has anybody had this happen before? Is she being ridiculous or is there a legit reason she should not eat the food since that weevil was in there?

when I baked dog treats professionally a life time ago, I used my friend’s commerical bakery in her off hours.

Her wheat flour wouuld have weevils in it every other year or so, and they would put the bags in the freezer. I used Grainfree flours and never had any issue with weevils.

And to gross everyone out… we have all most likely eaten weevils in baked goods.

Just trade your plate for her bowl and see how hungry you are :face_vomiting: really ?

  • there is never just one weevil !

Good idea. I really haven’t seen any more but I’ll freeze the stuff if I do!

She actually ate her whole bowl mid morning. I picked it up and then when I offered it an hour later she was more enthusiastic…

I am terrified about bugs so I can understand that ha ha. But this is a dog that thinks grasshoppers and June bugs are wonderful snacks…

She ate well mid morning. I think my husband started using wet food to entice ger and she’s expecting it now lol!

I’m surprised she was put off by the “extra treat”.
Sounds like she’s over her fright(?) & will probably be okay with the “bugged” food now.

Doncha just love when they treat us like Inept Help

Yeah maybe it was just a coincidence. She’s so sensitive so I’m partly not surprised but it seems harmless. I think she realized that the wet food was not coming back so she decided to eat. She has my husband’s number!!

Is it possible that the food is slightly stale or was stored in an unpleasantly smelling place before it was shipped? I’m not saying it’s “bad,” but even to my own taste…I’m sure all of us have a few staple processed foods and can recognize when, “ooh, got a really lovely fresh box of fragrant Honey Nut Cheerios,” versus, “meh, got the musty end of the shipment.” Hopefully, the new bag will be fresher.

No advice just want to say that I feel this post deeply lol. My Mastiff mix is a major drama queen and absolutely would refuse to eat for such an offense as a bug in his dish

She ate most of the bag…and it’s in a container with a lid in our house. I think she was being really picky honestly

I agree; I would probably start with a fresh bag of food. I would find it surprising that a dog would be afraid of bugs in their food and then stop eating. They are dogs; their brains don’t think that way.

My dogs would be upset if they got stung or bitten, but otherwise it wouldn’t bother them to find something alive in their food. Maybe even more exciting that way.

If your husband has been topping off her food with wet, she might refuse plain dry for a bit. I have a poodle who is uber picky, and won’t take treats, either. So his joint supplement and probiotic I mix into a bit of wet food and then mix that with his dry. He eats that pretty quickly, but when my husband gives him just dry, it sits for a long time.

It might have been a coincidence but I don’t think she was afraid of the bug lol. But something was different. And I think she’s training my husband to put extra yummy things in your food once she refuses it. Yesterday she fine but regardless the new bag of food came today.

I will say my other dog would also find a bug pretty exciting. But this one is soooooo sensitive to everything.

But I’m thinking she just figured out how to work my husband lol. She’s very very cute.

Would you eat it?
Would you take a child’s other food away and force them to eat the weevil-ly food out of hunger? Go to the store and buy your poor dog a bag of fresh food.

Lol. It was one weevil It wasn’t like it was infested. Not even sure if it was a weevil or not but based on the photos I think it was.

And I stated multiple times in this thread that she has new food. It was being delivered because we get her a special kind that isn’t always in the stores.

Anyways, I think she was being ridiculous but I wanted to post in coth In case there’s something I didn’t thought of. Was thinking like what is the bug laid eggs or something weird.

I feel like some people here sure are anthropomorphizing. It’s not like I was giving my dog some old moldy food covered in bugs. Lol. It’s fall and insects are moving in to the house a little more. She found one little bug in her bowl and then got weird about it. I replaced that bowl, even got her a new bowl, checked the rest of the food. And we had a new bag coming on the way. She started eating again so I think it was just that day.

As a person yes I don’t want food crawling with weird insects. But I am a horse person and I’ve definitely eaten some food that flies have landed on or what not. But my dogs seek out some insects like grasshoppers so I’m not sure they have the same squeamish attitude towards it as many of us do. But what made me pause was in case there’s something I hadn’t thought of. There are certainly insects I would think they would not want to mess with although I don’t think it’s because they think it’s gross. More like they sting. Or taste yucky.

She is very sensitive. One time our neighbor was moving his trash can next to his house while she was eating breakfast. For a while I could not feed her at that same time of day because she was scared and apparently associated a certain time of day with it.

What’s worse than finding a bug in your food?

Finding half a bug!

When I was a kid, I used to find weevils in my GrapeNuts all the time. Pretty much just picked them out when they started floating in the milk. That was back when it came straight out of the box, no inner bag.

Eww eww. I’m not used to dealing with them. I’m in Colorado and it’s dry here. We don’t have as many bugs as other places. I did have to deal with sugar ants for the first time this summer… That was super fun. They were SO tiny I wouldn’t be surprised if we ate a few before I realized they had set up shop on our counter.
