dog harness advice needed

Today we brought home our new dog Daisy, Plott hound/ beagle mix, and she has already backed out of her harness TWICE in 4 hours ! Her neck is fatter than her head so no collar stays on her, which we were warned. BF put the harness on snugly the first time and she backed out of it so easily, he tightened it to the point where the buckle popped open whenever she shook. I loosened it a bit bf pm potty and she got out of it in a jiffy. She heels beautifully and doesn’t leave our sides on the farm but I can’t have her loose in social situations. Anyone recommend a harness for a houdini dog ?

Try a martingale collar. It worked for my dog who has a neck bigger than his head and who would occasionally back out of his regular collars and hardness.

website is just an example of what I use.

i second the martingale collar- sometimes called a greyhound collar. Also LOVE halti/gentle leader. If you want a harness, I prefer the ones that look like a vest, and go on like a blanket. They can either have a buckle like this one:

or velcro like this one

Mine are velcro, and I can lift the 25lb dog up off the ground by the leash and dangle him no problem

Google “dog vest harness” for lots more styles

I have the Easywalk Harness for my AmStaff/Hound mix, and it works really well for pulling and so she can’t slip out. It has a martingale-style connection on her chest, so if she backs up it tightens a bit. She used to get a sore from the dangling chain on the martingale collar (sensitive AmStaff skin), but this one has a nylon loop instead of a chain, so I think it’s more comfortable for her.

This is the brand I have.

I use it mostly because she can get headstrong on walks, but even once we’ve fixed that issue I will continue to use this style harness.

I would use a cloth martingale collar to keep tags on and such for everyday use. However, I am not a fan of clipping a leash to anything that goes around a dog’s neck for everyday use even if they’re generally good on leash. I would pick a second piece of equipment for walks. Freedom Harness makes a really nice harness. I’ve never had trouble with a dog slipping out. Have you tried that harness yet?

Most dogs really dislike gentle leaders and they do come with a risk of injury, not only from improper use by the handler, but also if the dog makes a sudden move and hits the end of the leash. It’s not something I like to gamble on and I do not recommend them unless there’s no other good option.

Freedom Harness: has two points of attachment. You can use both at once or just use one.

Cloth martingale: there are some really fancy ones!

would not suggest an Easywalk harness for an escape artist- dogs can very easily wiggle out of them- any dog that backs up in one will have the harness just pop off over the dog’s head. If you use one, I suggest attaching the harness to the dog’s collar in some way, because they are so easy for dogs to ditch.

Strongly suggest not using one of those nose-halter things, dogs hate them, dogs can easily paw them off, and they carry a strong risk of causing neck damage.

Try the martingale, or try one of the harnesses described as “escape proof”, usually they have a belly strap as well as the usual chest straps, like this one: http://www.examiner.com/review/web-master-dog-harness-by-ruffwear-a-vital-necessity-for-escape-artist-dogs
