Dog - HUGE quanity of dark brown/greenish vomit

I came home from work and found a HUGE quanity of, fairly recent, dark brown/greenish vomit, kind of like a very soft poop, with lots of white foam on the stairs. It smells oddly sicky sweet.

We have two dogs, but I think it was the younger, black, dog as she is the one acting all embarrassed and slightly off.

The quantity is weird as both dogs ate at 7pm last night and not since. Neither one eats a ton, not anything like the quantity of “stuff” would have been left in their stomach late this afternoon.

I’ve scoured the whole house, looking for something she might have gotten into, but find no evidence of trash picking or chewed anything. She does go out with a dog walker at around noon, and I have a call into them to see where they went. There was an electrician in the house today, but he was working up in an area the dogs can’t get to and he wouldn’t mess with them as they bark at him a lot.

The black dog is acting subdued, but I can’t find anything else obviously wrong with her.

There is an emergency vet a couple of miles away, so I could just take her and the puke in to see if they have any ideas. One puke isn’t that big a deal, but I don’t know what caused it and if she ingested something horrible I don’t want to wait too long.

Has anyone seen this? The smell is just weird…very sweet and fruity smelling with a tiny undercurrent of something like petroleum or pencil shavings, I can’t describe it well.

I don’t want to over alarm, but the sweetness sounds like it could be antifreeze. Please take pup to the vet…

Yes, that was my first thought. I looked all over, the garage, the drive, etc…can’t find anything, no drips, no chewed containers. None of our vehicles are leaking and I spoke to the electrician and he says he didn’t even see the dog (the dogs are never outside without a person as our yard is not fenced). Unless she got into it on her walk (out in the woods, so unlikely), I can’t imagine where she would have gotten into it.

Weird-my first thought was horse poop but that’s usually recognizable.

What’s the hunting season situation there, could she have found a gut pile?

Dog walker need to call back to find out where she was!

Not horse poop, I board and she hasn’t been to the barn in several days and, yeah, it’s recognizeable…the hay in the horse poop puke is pretty easy to spot. She does like to eat poop of all kinds. It is shotgun season now, so it’s possible she found something on her walk. Our yard is heavily trafficked by wildlife: deer, black bear, bobcats, hawks, groundhogs, everything that lives in Massachusetts ;). She is REALLY into apple filled bear scat (we have a little orchard, so we get that). I don’t let her eat it, but maybe her walker didn’t see her getting into something…off leash with multiple dogs.

She’s acting better now, I gave her a TINY, boiled chicken only, dinner and she perked up.

Yeah, a gorge on a gut pile she found out in the woods with the walker might explain things pretty well. There was some vegetable matter in it, in addition to the super sweet fruit smell.

:dead:

Yeah, dogs are disgusting ;). Part of why I love them so well!

Bile is often greenish tinged, so its generally not a huge concern that puke has that kind of colour to it. Stomach acids are often “sweet” smelling too…yeah kind of gross. I would be worried if there is more vomiting or change in appetite. But not unrealistic to just monitor at home for now if there has only been one episode of vomiting.

Antifreeze toxicity usually acts very quick, the dog will often act nauseous and within a couple hours ataxic, and potentially seizure. At 12+ hours without treatment many die. So, doesn’t sound like antifreeze to me

As someone who has worked countless nights in emerg - if its a vomiting lab, its a foreign body. Lets hope your lab is an exception to the rule!

Thanks, SquishTheBunny, that’s very reassuring! She seems normal this morning, so some wildlife related indiscretion on her hike seems likely. She’s a BC mix, but is not above some Lablike eating of random things, so I’ll keep an eye on her today.

Our dogs personalities can be so frustrating when trying to figure out if they are sick. The BC mix is very “soft” and feels guilty about everything, so she slinks around and looks miserable when she has an accident of any kind…telling the difference between sick and just feeling ashamed of herself is hard, no amount of reassurance will make her feel better until she forgets about it. The ACD mix is such a hardass, she will NEVER let on if she is sick or in pain.
