Ok I don’t know what happened. Was trying to post on a completely different topic and what I had written weeks ago and never posted but “auto saved” ended up beig posted, so disregard the dog poop thread if you read it.
Correct topic coming up soon.
My newest rescue dog is making kitty hairball noises and coughing up some really stretchy white foam every 15 minutes or so for the last hour and a half. He is alert, playful, ate his breakfast and is drinking/eliminating normally. Begging for treats right now.
Will call the vet in the morning, but making sure I don’t have an emergency on my hands. He is acting so normal but this stuff sounds gross. Thoughts?
Can you check his mouth/throat to see if something is stuck there?
I wouldn’t feed him while this is going on. If it doesn’t resolve in a few hours, I would take him in - but I am a worrier!
Leave his mouth alone, you’re more likely to aggrivate it or get bit trying to check. Sounds like Kennel Cough, try rubbing the outside of his throat like you would to encourage swallowing a pill. If he coughs, bingo.
It would be incredibly rare for a dog with something lodged in its throat to be active and playful, plus they either refuse to eat or choke worse.
When we get a cold/allergies and have that nasty mucous running down the back of our throats we clear our throats. Dogs cannot clear their throats the way humans do so they typically cough it up.
I hope it is kennel cough. Our old dog had bloat and was coughing stringy white foam, but she was clearly in distress. Bloat is absolutely an an emergency. If anything changes, go straight to the emergency vet. Jingles he gets better.
So an update of sorts:
The coughing stopped. He’s fine now, think he just had something stuck in his throat.
He is a small dog (under 14 lbs) and eats from a slow feed bowl, so hopefully we don’t have to worry too much about bloat. I’ll definitely keep an eye on him for a few days, though!
I’ve been told it can be a symptom of congestive heart failure, too. Depending on age I’d keep an eye on him and maybe get him checked by a vet if he is older. (Vets around here often have senior dog exams that are a little more detailed than a regular routine check up.)
They also hack up white foamy stuff with a bacterial or viral respiratory infection.
Thanks guys. So far so good today. He has an appointment for a thyroid checkup this week, I’ll ask about it then, too!
Jingles & AO for your dear dog ~
Jingles & AO for your dear dog ~ sounds like the problem has disappeared
I have also had a heartworm+ dog do this, so that may be something to check if the rescue didn’t screen him for them.
Ack! Y’all have me freaked out!
Guess ill try to get him in earlier…,
Also, thanks for All of the replies…and for the ZuZu jingles:)
I have a 5 year old Plott Hound who, every now and then, will do this coughing bit for about 90 seconds, and throw up some water that is full of what I can only describe as a clear, thick mucus. Sometimes, it has some white stringy foam in it. He pukes, sometimes tries to lick it up before I can clean it up, and then goes on about his day. Happens maybe once every two months. No idea why.
Wanted to update this in case anyone had a similar problem in the future.
Pup went to the vet, and vet was initially worried about a collapsing trachea, so we did chest X-rays. His throat was fine, but the X-rays revealed a bit of bronchitis that he may have had for a while but was beig aggravated by allergies or something. Put him on some antibiotics and cough meds, and he is as good as new!
Since starting the meds Friday, I’ve seen a complete improvement. No coughing, ad no foam! So, there ya have it.
Great news update ~ thanks for posting ~
So glad your dear dog is back to normal !
Thanks for the good news update
